Resurrecting old threads
Posted By: leon
Unless there is a good reason we shouldn't be resurrecting months old threads. I just popped one back to where it should have been as there was some controversy and it had been taken care of. I consider this an operational situation and not a censoring one. IF you are well known on the board and there is a good reason to bring an old one back, then fine. A new thread can always be started .....

Resurrecting old threads
Posted By: Dan Bretta
I'm not sure why it's happening, but I've noticed that new posters most often do it because they don't know how to start a new thread. I'm not sure why that last fella resurrected that last thread...the only thing I can think of is he did a search for Steve's collectibles and that thread must have come up even though the thread had nothing to do with "Steve's collectibles".

Resurrecting old threads
Posted By: davidcycleback
It likely happens that someone finds an old thread on a google search, reads it then adds his comments to the others. He may not even think about whether or not the thread is old, as it's new to him.

Posted By: leon
You might be right. But then it's my right to take care of it too. If that person comes back and sees his thread is gone he might/should email me. I will let him know to start a new thread. I have no issue talking about stuff, especially when folks aren't anonymous, but I think they really should know what they are doing BEFORE they post. I try to handle things a lot more gently than I used to...best regards

Posted By: Jason L
Is it a housekeeping thing, or harder to deal with, operationally?

seems harmless enough, as long as it's relevant, but what do I know?
Resurrecting old threads
Posted By: Dan Bretta
Jason, there really is nothing wrong with it if it's relevant to the thread. What's been occurring lately is newbies posting to threads with a message that is completely irrelevant to the topic.

Posted By: leon
I am in agreement with Dan. There is no real harm but in that instance there was some controversy and it was brought back to light for a reason that had nothing to do with the topic of the original thread. I would prefer old threads not be brought back up BUT won't pop them back unless there is a reason...again, in this case, since the new post had nothing to do with the thread I popped it back. IF someone brings back an innocuous T206 thread, or other informative thread, I would let it go. I always have a reason, right or wrong, for what I do....and try not to interfere too much. best regards

Resurrecting old threads
Posted By: davidcycleback
I remember when someone who had never posted before resurrected many ancient threads by adding irrelevant, meaningless comments. It happened at approx 3am, likely with a few drinks involved, and resembled spam (the board suddenly filled with irrelevant stuff, blocking out the real current topics). So I appreciate Leon being conscious of the issue.

Obviously if the 3am poster posted scans of a newly found addition to the discussed set, no one's going to complain that he bumped one old thread.

The Net54 rule of thumb is, if you're going say something meaningless, say it in a current thread. That way it will blend in with the other current meaningless posts.

Resurrecting old threads
Posted By: barrysloate
There's a disconnect between old and new threads. Sometimes a poster responds to a comment made six months ago, and that previous poster may not even remember what he wrote. He may not even open the thread this time around.
