Posted By: Jay
It is come to our attention that a few people have complained to Brett at Old Cardboard that the ad for the book is misleading because Ernie Harwell, who wrote the forward to the book and is identified in our ad as being a "Hall of Famer", is not in the baseball Hall of Fame. Mr Harwell, one of the greatest announcers of all time is in multiple Hall of Fames and has been honored by the baseball Hall of Fame:

Harwell was honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 as the fifth broadcaster to receive its Ford C. Frick Award. He was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Radio Hall of Fame in 1998, among many other honors. In 2001, Harwell was the recipient of the prestigious Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting, awarded by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame inducted Harwell in 2008.

We are extremely proud of Ernie's association with the book.

Posted By: Fred C
The forward of the book could have been written by Jose Canseco and I would still buy it. I'm paying $125 for "the book" because it's going to have some great content. I'd have paid more for it if I had to.

Posted By: Rob D.
I can't tell you how many times I've bought a book, read the preface, been disappointed and just thrown the book away without even reading the rest.

The worst, though, is finishing a book, reading a subpar appendix and then fighting like hell to forget everything I just read out of spite.

Posted By: Fred C
I've defaced many books in my time. For example, the first thing I used to do when I picked up the standard catalog of baseball cards would be to use a utility knife to cut out the modern major league card section (1981 to present). This reduced the size of the book from about 1600 pages to about 600 pages. I get the feeling I wont be cutting anything out of "the book" on OJs.

Posted By: Joe_G.
I've been away for awhile but had to log-on after learning of the concern over Mr. Harwell's "Hall of Fame Announcer" title. For me, the highlight of working on the book wasn't the many great collections I was able to handle, study, and write about but instead sharing the book with the legendary Ernie Harwell. Beyond the many honors bestowed Ernie Harwell covered by Jay Miller, here are just a couple facts I'd like to share:

- Ernie Harwell began writing for "The Sporting News" in 1934! and has not stopped, still writing for the Detroit Free Press today. He has also authored several baseball books.
- Served 4 years in the Marines.
- Began broadcasting in 1948 logging a total of 55 years on radio and TV.
- The Brooklyn Dodgers traded their catcher Cliff Dapper for his services in 1948 (only announcer to be traded for a player). An interesting time (and team) in baseball history.
- Mr. Harwell would find himself with New York by 1961 and would call Bobby Thomson's "shot heard around the world" on NBC television.
- Ernie would broadcast for the Tigers in 1960 and log 42 years with them.

And a little more about his connection to the Old Judge set . . .

- Among the many famous personalities Ernie has interviewed, Connie Mack, while still managing the Athletics. Who else can claim they interviewed someone from the Old Judge set?
- Lastly, Ernie has an amazing baseball collection, largely donated to the Detroit Public Library including an interesting Old Judge collection containing a nice mix of cards including an extremely rare card of Flynn.

It was a great honor to have Ernie Harwell endorse our book with a fantastic Foreword.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Posted By: Jim VB
Dan,

I'm pretty confident, based upon past history, that your check will be lost in the mail. However, being the stand-up guys they are, these guys will send you a book anyway. Unfortunately, the plane carrying that UPS shipment will never arrive at it's final destination. (Think - the new season of "Lost.")

Using track record as a guide, there is nothing you could have done to prevent this outcome.

Posted By: dan mckee
Josh Evans of Lelands once had a very rare and expensive package lost by UPS during their strike year. The contents were never found as the item was one of a kind. I just hope Richard knows to hold my check for 6 weeks before depositing it, I think I forgot to write those instructions with it.
