D303 Population...General Baking vs Mothers' Bread
Posted By: Dave F
Just curious of the board members that hold D303's what percentage of backs you have are what? My lone example is a Mothers' Bread........if you don't have scans please at least list how many of each back you have.

Oh, and I picked this one up in some auction house..can't remember which. I'll have to find out from Leon if they are an advitiser or not.

Posted By: Alan U
Not to hijack the thread, but Dave's D303 (Louden) on the left, E101 (Knabe) on the right. Which is the correct name for the picture?

D303 Population...General Baking vs Mothers' Bread
Posted By: robert a
I haven't done as much research as I planned to on D303, but it seems clear to me that the D303 General Baking backed cards were inserted to bread that was sold in the New York area similar to D304. You even see the same three breads on the back of the D304 and D303 GB backs. The main General Baking Co. factory was in Buffalo.

The Mothers backs were distributed in the New Orleans area. There was a GB factory in New Orleans.

(Check out some pics of the factory here: http://louisdl.louislibraries.org/cdm4/results.php?CISOOP1=any&CISOFIELD1=CISOSEARCHALL&C ISOROOT=/CCA&CISOBOX1=general

As with all NO issues there are many reasons why these cards didn't survive, but I would assume hurricane flooding is a major contributor to their scarcity. They were probably produced in lighter numbers anyways.

One thing's clear, the NO residents took a liking to the tobaccos, candy and bread issues of the north. They just caught on a couple years later down there.

I'd throw out a wild guess of 10 General Baking D303s for every Mothers back.
They're all so tough it's hard to say.

D303 Population...General Baking vs Mothers' Bread
Posted By: Andrew
I have Miller (fielding) and Mcquillan. Both are General Baking. I will post scans later tonight. D303s still have a lot of mystery to them. Does anyone know whether a complete set has been accumulated by a single collector? Even mixed with General Baking and Mothers backs?

Obviously it is challenging to even estimate how much more difficult the Mothers back is to locate versus General Baking. From what I have seen over the past 5-6 years I would guess somewhere around 75% of D303s are General Baking. . .

Andrew

D303 Population...General Baking vs Mothers' Bread
Posted By: leon
I have watched these for a while but it's also been a while since I have been able to add any to my collection.....I would guesstimate the population to be about 5 to 1 in favor of the General Baking backs.....I know of one collector, infrequent board poster but frequent reader, who is almost complete on the GB backs....Personally I have never seen a group of more than 14 Mothers Bread cards and I was the underbidder on them, in a Mastro auction several years ago. A good friend won them and I eventually got a few of those....Here are mine so far...(these are the tiny versions due to kb requirements)
