E254 Colgan's checklist completed
Posted By: John S
Over the last 12 years I have been collecting Colgan’s. As with many sets, one becomes fascinated (and frustrated) with the nuances, anecdotes, and inconsistencies. I have spent the last few months attempting to construct an up to date and accurate listing for E254 Colgan's Chips. Obviously the checklist has been in place for years, I have just made revisions, clarifications, and additions. The new list includes (in most cases) full player names, team and league affiliations, and probable years of issue for players with multiple E254's issued between 1909 and 1911.

I have also ranked each card on a scale of 1 to 5 based on scarcity (1 being the easiest). Assigning five levels was subjective but seemed to be the best fit based on my experience. Many of the Colgan's were probably issued continuously during print runs from 1909 to 1911. These obviously would receive a 1 or 2 ranking. Others could have only been issued during one year (for instance if a player was traded in 1911 and is represented with his new team on an updated E254). These explanations, however, are extremely oversimplified because many Colgan's seem more difficult to find than would be expected and vice-versa.

Whether you are long-time Colgan’s collector or simply know a little about the set I would invite you to view the checklist and offer criticisms and opinions. I will consider all opinions and make revisions to the checklist based upon this input.

If interested, please post in this thread or email me and I will send you a Word copy of the checklist. Highlight your changes/additions in another color or just send me a note in an email.

The Standard Catalog, old Larry Fritsch catalogs, Lew’s book, the NY Times online (to search at least 1000 old articles and boxscores), and the SABR database were used as references. I would also like to thank everyone who also responded to my posts over the last few months; your input has been assimilated into the checklist.
I am looking forward to your input.

Looking back over the list today I realized that I had yet to identify one player (Lakoff). If anyone has any information regarding this player let me know. I could not find any records for him.

This post is pretty old, but I was wondering if anyone has this e254 checklist with the scarcities listed?
Can’t find a e254 scarcity list anywhere other than the HOFers. |
I'd like to see that list, also... If any of you that see this has the list, please pm me. Thank You!
I don't know how I missed this first time around. |
Add me to the line. Not sure how I missed this thread the first time. Would appreciate it if anyone could pass along the list.
|
Thanks for the hard work. Would love a copy. richarddwyer at sbcglobal dot net.

Hey Pat... I saw that last night... my rememberer missed remembering it.
I'm about 2 laptops past the one that it would be on. If I find it on an old laptop, I'll send copies to everyone, and to myself to save on my current laptop. Otherwise, maybe I need to report myself to Leon so he can ban me for a bit. |
Good morning all. I sold my Colgan’s four years ago after 25 years of working on the set. I will have to do a little digging but believe I have a copy of the checklist list on an external drive somewhere. Send me a pm if interested with an email and I will forward a copy.
If Leon is interested I could also send the list to him to be archived. |
Re: Colgans
I would like a copy as well. Thanks, John.

The list needs an addition...
Orville Selby should have two cards, 186a and 186b. The footnotes, 32 and 32a, accurately describe what the two cards should be. The Selby card has two distinctly different images. One shows a small head/image (should be 186a); and the other shows a large head/image (which should be 186b). When I initially came across the a Shelby card that was remarkably different from the one I had, I thought that all of these cards had varying size images. But I soon decided that it wasn't true for all of the cards, just Selby's. And for those who read the old thread on this list, and they see that I asked for the list in each thread, I think I didn't receive the list the first time, or if I did I quickly lost it. |
I’d love a copy of the list.
|
I would like to get one also if possible.
|
I'll email a Word doc of my revised list (Selby) to folks that email me at yeswakefield@gmail.com I'll do that for the next couple of months for those who email... I don't know that I'll be good to honor that years from now...

A day later, I've sent out 4 of the lists.
Here are the two versions of Selby. If you've not seen the two versions before, it's obvious why there should be separate listings, I think. https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1679107565 Do any of you have other suggestions for that list?? |
|
I would like to receive an updated checklist also, if available.
