Babe Ruth "Holding Bird"
Posted By: Steve
E121 Ruth,

Anyone know the significance of this pose?

I was initially thinking... He helped the tired bronx fowl on the field and is giving the thing a lift. Then, A peace symbol and this photo was shot in tribute for the end of WWI. But since the war ended in November 1918. Again, I've changed course.

My current WAG; In the old days, carrier pigeons were used to send (game) photos off to press and this peep was about to fly off with a photo of Babe slamming one out or simply a highlight report. The other little fellow looks "Reporter".

(There is a bird box on the ground)

Thanks to BCM

Posted By: Anonymous
Carrier pigeons used for correspondence were not passenger pigeons and they are not extinct. They were invaluable communication sources during WWI and even WWII. Like Steve wrote they were also used for spreading news so he may be right about the bird the Babe is holding.

Posted By: Tim
In the Boston Evening American , Nick Flatley wrote that the Red Sox had "lost the greatest drawing card the game has ever known, and the esteem of many of thousands of supporters." Calling Ruth "a bird [who] hops into the picture once in a lifetime," Flatley predicted the quick demise of a Ruth-less Red Sox and the prompt elevation of the Yankees into pennant contention.

A 5 lb bag of bird seed costs $7 at Petsmart.

Huey, Dewey and Louey,
