Cards with Wide Borders

Posted By: barrysloate
When I now list cards on ebay or in my catalog, if they have oversized borders I make sure to stress that. As a result, I've noticed that those cards are doing very well, better than ones in equal grades that have smaller borders.

Does everyone agree that with the problem of some questionable cards being holdered, oversized cards should be worth at least a small premium (and in time perhaps a significant one)?

Posted By: MVSNYC
barry- there certainly is a higher comfort level with said cards, but i wouldn't ask for a premium, they would simply realize slightly higher prices on their own.

Posted By: barrysloate
Michael- I think if you had, for example, two of the same card for sale, and both were in the identical grade, and one had huge borders and the other had narrow ones, you could ask and get a little more for the oversized copy.

It may not be done now but it might be a trend in the future. With more and more oversized cards being trimmed down by card doctors, there will be less of them around.

Posted By: boxingcardman
After all, a doctor can't cut down a card with normal or small borders but can work his magic on those with wider borders, so there should be more people bidding on them.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc

Cards with Wide Borders

Posted By: Fred C
Even 10+ years ago there were people looking for cards with large borders because some people would perform a little card "surgery" before submitting them to be graded. Obviously, the overall appearance of the card makes a difference. If the card is a beater and would only grade a "1" or "2" on its own merits then no amount of doctoring would help the card and it wouldn't be worth the extra $$$ to purchase the card (for the wrong intent).

Posted By: barrysloate
How about if we shoot for sometime between April 20-May 20 for a Peter Luger's visit? We should be able to get a 6:45 seating that far in adavnce. Maybe we could do a table for 6 or 8 and first to say "I'm in" joins us.

I just hijacked my own thread. Back to wide borders, please

Posted By: barrysloate
I have several in my upcoming auction, and I mention the borders, but please don't ask for scans as that is beyond my capability. I'm sure there are numerous examples out there that collectors can post on this thread.

Posted By: steve
I sometimes see PSA'ed T206's that seem too fishy with skimpy boarders - and cannot believe they were never trimmed - wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole, or any pole for that matter.

I only consider wide boarders with T206's. If they look at all small, or if the card floats around too much in the holder, I will not even consider them for purchase.

Period!

steve.
