The problem with card holders

Posted By: Shoppincher
Hello

I was talking to a close friend who works to preserve paper related items. I showed her a card in a psa container. She said that some plastics can damage cards because they give off a gas. The process is called "off gassing". I do not know if these containers do this. This is just a heads up for collectors.

The problem with card holders

Posted By: barrysloate
Some plastics have PVC's which over time will damage paper. The most inert plastic, and the safest, is mylar.

When a card is placed in a thin sleeve before being slabbed, that sleeve is mylar. But I would hope each grading company uses plastics that are safe.

The problem with card holders

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
The last couple of cards I broke out of PSA holders had the card laying atop the sleeve, not IN the sleeve. The last SGC holder I broke had no sleeve at all. Maybe those guys should use the sleeves to preserve the card.

What a world it will be one day if all of the slabbed cards are deemed tampered with because of the chemicals transferred while confined in plastic....

The problem with card holders

Posted By: Paul S
The U.S. gov't allows a certain % of plastic "leeching" in food and drink packaging too. Bottled water is one big culprit. Next time you run your blacklight over a card to check for counterfeiting/altering, run it over yourself and see if you fluoresce too!
