52 topps mantle rookie
Posted By: evan
A little help please. An acquaintance has asked me to help sort, catalog, and sell a large baseball card collection. Included are a full 57 topps set and a real nice 52 topps Mantle rookie, ungraded but in a screwdown holder for over 20 years. Suggestions would be appreciated as to which auction houses would suit us best. I have yet to discuss with him my percentage for my work. Thanks

Posted By: Anonymous
Just be damned careful with the screwdown holder. Quite often, the surface of the front of the card will stick to the lucite and destroy the card. After 20 years, I'd be REAL nervous.

A PSA or SGC graded 52 Mantle will sell easily on eBay-- no shortage in demand for that card. You could consign it if you wish, but you may find it easier to sell on your own.

If it's high grade, you can consign it to an auction house like Mastro Auctions, Mile High Auction Co, Goodwin & Co and Memory Lane (note list of auction houses subtly included in sentence).

Posted By: JimB
I would be hesitant to try to sell a 52 Mantle on Ebay with an id that is unknown to the hobby. Even on ebay, I would consign it to one of the bigger ebay sellers. Otherwise, many potential bidders may not trust the auction.
JimB

Posted By: Evan
The card is definitely not low grade. I would most definitely not try to handle the card myself. The lucite holder is one of the very thick ones, perhaps 1 inch each panel, and I'm estimating on the 20 years. The card does have beautiful color and no obvious discoloration. I do have an ebay account, I buy and sell primarily hof autographs. I have bought from all the major auction houses but have never dealt with cards. I have also consigned to Hunt, Lelands, and R&R, but that was for signed goods. Thanks very much for your input. Would anyone venture to say what I should ask the seller for my help. A percentage of the gross perhaps?

I would suggest a big auction house to help advertise it and get the higher price for it.

Also, I was just looking at the POP report on this card and began to wonder who are the owners of the three PSA10's of this card?

Matt

Posted By: Anonymous
Nice card Evan. I would love to own a card like that. That card will sell well no matter if you sell it or another person on Ebay, as long as you have 100+ feedback and your feedback in 99%. I would think that card would grade out a 6 or a 7.

If it were me, I would get it graded by one of the two companies and sell it by myself.

Shane

Posted By: Noel
Evan,

No worries with taking the card out and it sticking to the holder. I took out a 53 Mays I had in a (bullet proof) holder for about 20 years and no sweat. It is the newer (glossy) cards that will stick. Dont know much about auction houses but i would assume they would be happy to get it graded for you if for nothing else than it would maximize profit and ease anyones mind regarding authenticity.

Posted By: Evan
I would like to thank those of you that offered your help and advice. Frank, thanks for loading the picture for me. Last night I found 2 other Mantle cards (not 52's), and a full 1957 topps set. It's kind of like a treasure hunt. I'm beginning to understand why collecting cards is such an interesting hobby. Thanks again

Posted By: Matt
Send it in to the grading company in the screw down with a note letting them know that you'll forgive any damage that occurs as a result of them taking it out of the case; if you're new to handling high dollar cards, might as well let the experts do it. It would be tragic if you nicked a corner taking it out of the screw down.

Posted By: Evan
We have decided to consign the cards to Lelands. They were very easy to deal with (Keith) and agreed to take the whole collection. The 52 Mantle will be graded by SGC as well as some of the 57 topps. The cards will be in the next catalog auction. I would again like to thank those of you who offered input.
