1914 Cracker Jack Mathewson_not what it seems?
Posted By: Brian
I came across this tonight, and it gave me a weird feeling from the word go.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1914-Christy-Mathewson-Cracker-Jack-Card_W0QQitemZ170192166496QQihZ007QQcategoryZ86841 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

*The seller has a 97% positive rating
*Hasn't sold anything in 3 years
*The auction was for 1 day only
*I think the scan of the card is the SGC 20, that was sold in the Mastro December Auction, although I could not find a scan to compare.

Either that, or I am off my rocker and someone is going to get a screaming deal on a expensive card.

Posted By: Jeff W.
I have seen that card somewhere and I pretty sure its a stolen scan.

Why all the fluff in the ebay listing?

I can't imagine spending big money for a card that is not graded. Don't get me wrong, I have bought raw cards before, but they were all from a board member or reputable dealer.

Jeff W.

Posted By: Adam
Something is fishy, he also has a Mantle rookie in great condition on a 1 day auction.

Posted By: Brian
You can really see it in the Mantle, the scans are lifted and cropped, they are SGC holders. Is there anyway to get eBay to end the auction?

Posted By: Matt
I spoke with the seller yesterday.
I asked him for a a better image of the front of the card, suspicious he stole the scans.
He responded that he has no scanner.
I asked how he got the images then.
He did not respond.

Posted By: davidcycleback
Using common sense, if the auction was legitimate it wouldn't be for one day. The purpose in picking an auction duration is to maximize, not minimize, the sell price. One day can only serve to minimize the sell price, and its hard to believe someone would chose to suppress the bidding on a genuine CJ Mathewson he was really offering for sale. eBay sellers pick 7 and 10 durations specifically to give the card expose, get more bids and a higher final price-- they know the eventual winning bidder might not even first notice the lot until day 3 or 4.

I know of an eBay seller who sometimes has 24 hour auctions of quality expensive photos, but he's a bit off the wall and I've bought from him before (in 7 day auctions) and know the stuff he sells is real and you'll get in the mail. And the 24 day auctions don't start at $9.99. More like $299.99, which is probably a price he would be satisfied for the item to go for. He's the only legitimate seller I've come across who does this.
