Homogenized Bond Bread Cards - Again
 

Posted By: <b>Paul</b><p>I've been seeing some Homogenized Bond cards on ebay lately that seem to have corners that are TOO round. The roundness is almost perfectly smooth, and is very large. I am wondering if people are now trimming the square ones to make the corners appear round.

Posted By: <b>davidcycleback</b><p>Not commenting specifically about these Bond Breads in particular (as I haven't seen them), but, for round edge cards (1913 National Game, Nap Lajoie Game Cards, etc), if the corners are rounded much differently than the genuine cards that is a reliable sign in and of itself that the card isn't original. Most game card reprints can be identified simply by looking at the corners. <br /><br />The National Games, Polo Grounds and such were factory die-cut en mass, and the corners are resultingly uniform throughout all the sets and cards. This is as opposed to someone in front of his television scissor cutting corner by corner. In the latter, not only can a corner be different than genuine, but each of the four corners can be different than each other-- proverbial Three Stooges, where they're all misfits and all different.

Posted By: <b>Iggy....</b><p>Class in session...<br /><br />1947 Homogenized Bread Cards 101..<br /><br />Okay, I bit on one of these...just received it today. I purchased the Mize card, set me back about ~$12, so it will serve as a good learning experience. The card is about 1/16" to 1/8" of an inch bigger then my other 1947 Homogenized cards. The card stock feels thinner; actually, when you hold the back side (the blank side) up to a light source, you can see the Mize image from the other side (this does not happen with my other cards). Finally, the corners definitely were cut with a scissor; and this was obvious (even in the auction pic.), but in my haste, I didn't notice it at the time. On the plus side, the back doesn't have that toning color of the square-cornered reprints. <br /><br />Hopefully, Ted Z. or another expert will chime in on this one...<br /><br /><img src="http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/3/9/9/9/7/7/webimg/96781906_o.jpg"><br /> <img src="http://img.auctiva.com/imgdata/3/9/9/9/7/7/webimg/96792333_o.jpg"><br /><br />-Lovely Day, Iggy...

Posted By: <b>Ted Zanidakis</b><p>A close look at DiMaggio's upper left and lower right corners shows that the die-cut punch<br />did not provide a clean cut. Of course all these cards came off the printer's press in square <br />form. Then were cut from (24 or 48 card) sheets and the final operation was to bevel their<br /> corners, in order to fit these cards into the Bond Bread loaf packaging.<br /><br />Approx. 99% of the cards I have seen, have all four corners perfectly rounded. My DiMaggio<br /> card is an exception.<br /><br />TED Z
