Billy Southworth, soaring high!

Posted By: Paul
Maybe his election to the Hall is having an effect on his prewar cards, even if his '51 Bowman can still be picked up for less than most new packs of cards.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160190945817&ssPa geName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006

Posted By: Phil Garry
I know some collectors don't like the strip cards but I recently (after HOF voting) picked up a Southworth W514 for $26.00 in VG-EX condition. The E121 appears to be in excellent condition for the issue though and might grade as the highest (if not altered/trimmed at all).

Be well Brian

PS Someone vote Reulbach in....I have plenty of him...smiley

Posted By: leon
I love that card with the child. Too bad I waited and now might not pick one up due to the pricing. Maybe we can find some dirt on the kid and it will drag the value down a little so I can justify buying one? BTW, I don't think your scan does justice to that card. I bet it's clear and a beauty.....warmest regards

Posted By: Brian Weisner

Thanks Leon,
I bought the card for the pose too.. I bet he's teaching the kid how to Bunt... which doesn't happen much these days. Be well Brian

PS You might be right about digging some dirt up on the kid, as it is an election year.... smiley... It would be cool to know if the kid was his, a fan, or a batboy.

PS 2 Your right my scanner is a little old... But its the Holiday season, so my wife has the Camera.

Posted By: Paul
I picked up a W501 just a week or so before his election. Purely dumn luck. I liked the picture. Any idea how the value of this one compares to E121?

Posted By: Anthony
Was Billy Southworth Jr. the one whose plane crashed, sending dad on a drinking binge that cost him his job? Perhaps a B-25?

Posted By: Anthony
Thanks Dan, thought it was something like that. In Leo Durocher's autobiography Nice Guys Finish Last, there was something about a critical trade that was brought about by Southworths grief and ensuing drinking binge. I'll have to dig up the book, it's one of my favorites.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
You know the age of the boy on the card is probably about right with Southworth Jr. I wouldn't be surprised if it is him and now that makes me a little bit sad to look at the card..

Posted By: Larry
Yes Dan, his son was born in 1917, so it is likely him.
It also makes me feel sad to think about it.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
Well for several years I've been after one of those cards depicting Southworth with what I thought was his son... seems like it will cost a bit more, now.

Here are the Southworth items I have. Never could get an index card, I'd settled for a cut.
