Should "Over 300 Subjects" be Listed on the Flip of M116s?
 

Posted By: <b>Matt</b><p>Currently, I don't believe any of the grading companies differentiate between M116s with the "Over 300 Subjects" backs to those without, yet I have been told that due to the "Over 300 Subjects" back being far scarcer, it brings up to a 50% premium in sale. <br /><br />Should the grading companies include this variation in the information on the flip?

Posted By: <b>Mark T</b><p>This was a card i once owned and SGC listed it on the front as "over 300 subjects" but i don't see it on SGC slabs much anymore. Also, i don't think the premium is 50%....maybe 20%. Posted By: <b>paulstratton</b><p>No. The cards with "Over 300" backs only come with this back, the premium is because the cards are in the tougher/later series and not because of the back. If you are talking about the cards that were re-issued with the "300 subjects" back then I can see your point and would say yes. For instance, Cobb with a "300" back should be noted because it is a re-issue.

Posted By: <b>Matt</b><p>Paul - the card I submitted and made the request on was a Hal Chase which was issued initially with a regular back and then re-issued with the more difficult "Over 300 Subjects" back. Not sure why SGC wouldn't do it if I specially requested it - it's certainly not inaccurate.

Posted By: <b>Mark T</b><p>M116 i used to own. The Chick Lathers only comes in "300 subjects" back as with the Zimmerman. But, on this card SGC did not note the back on this Lathers. Posted By: <b>Tim Newcomb</b><p>The "300 Backs" grading label really only makes sense in the case of those cards which are more often found with other backs. Zimmerman and the others from series 19-24 appear only with this back, so why should it be listed as a special feature? There are two different backs that all other M116s appear with-- if you list the 300 Subj, you should list them all. But there's really no reason to.<br /><br />However, with the low-numbered series cards that were reissued later with the 300 Subj back, the companies should definitely indicate this back, and it really should command a significant premium as they are quite scarce. <br /><br />I would say that in general the scarcer 300 Subject cards in Series 19-24 do go for 50% more than lower-series commons, but it varies a lot depending on which set builders need those particular 300 Subj cards. <br /><br />Tim

Posted By: <b>paulstratton</b><p>It seems like almost all of the re-issue 300 subjects I see are from series 1, with the exception of Bobby Byrne(series 6). Cobb, Jennings and Matty seem to be the most prevalent, or it could be that they just get recycled more than others. Were these re-issued as team sets? It's interesting that you put a premium on these re-issues, as I've always discounted them, but I see your point. They just look "different" in some way than the regular version, a little brighter, with less border clarity. Up until what year were these issued? Any ideas?

Posted By: <b>Tim Newcomb</b><p>Hi Paul,<br /><br />You're right-- most come from Series 1, so that means a lot of them are HOFers. I've seen a few from other series, but it is quite selective. (All the info we have will be in an article eventually.) My educated guess right now is that Series 1 was reprinted late with this back due to high demand, and the others we see may be from the team sets that we have seen envelopes for. <br /><br />I have seen Byrne as well-- if you run across any others not from Series 1, it would be helpful to know about them<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br /><br />Tim
