Memory Lane's SGC crossover guaranty??

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
On the PSA 5 E107 Cy Young, Memory Lane guaranteed that it would cross to an SGC 60. Does this mean, do you think, they cleared it with SGC in advance (which would seem most unusual to say the least), or was JP just extremely confident? Not sure I have ever seen anything like this before. Thoughts?

LOT#1 1903 E107 Breisch Williams, Type 1 Cy Young PSA 5 EX - This card is guaranteed to cross to a SGC 60 (5)
BIDS: 27
OPENING BID: $25,000.00
CURRENT BID: $58,000.00
Posted By: MVSNYC
this is off the top of my head, i would say, "guarnteed" means guarnteed...

so my guess is that dave foreman (or his graders) already saw the card and blessed it...

BUT, JP probably figured it would command more $$$ in the PSA holder, so he didn't cross it?

interesting discussion...

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
Not saying it couldn't have happened, but would SGC really opine on a card that expensive without taking it out of the holder? Is this now to become a common practice?

Posted By: MVSNYC
peter- when PSA & SGC do a cross-over review, they analyze the card in the holders...if they do not meet your minmum grade, they don't get cracked-out and crossed-over

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
Michael I know but my understanding was that they would not cross cards this expensive just based on an examination in the holder -- the only way they would grade them is to crack them out.

Posted By: boxingcardman
Dave Forman has been very explicit on that point--they don't want the risk.

My guess is that JP will take the card back if it doesn't cross and get PSA to reencapsulate. Remember, he has a commission and/or BP that he is being paid to sell this card. Even if he has to take it back, he can pocket some % of the sale price and offer it to an underbidder while still making a profit. Plus he probably figures no one will crack it out and risk an adverse SGC response.

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc

Memory Lane's SGC crossover guaranty??

Posted By: Bottom of the Ninth
The card seems over graded by at least 1 full grade based merely on the corners. I hope SGC was not the one issuing a guarantee. SGC does not offer cross overs (in the holder) for cards valued at more than $500. This card may not even warrant an SGC 50. I believe JP has an all sales are final on his auctions so what would a buyer do if they found themselves relying on, what appears to be his guarantee?

Still perplexed how PSA would grade such a high profile card EX, that looks like this.

Greg

Posted By: Glyn Parson
We will on a case by case basis crossover cards valued at more than $500. You must however pay the fee for the appropriate tier level for the cards value (Not the $7 crossover rate). We will cross if we feel it meets or exceeds the minimum grade requested, and the current holder does not obscure us from being able to see the entire card including the edges. If we feel we are not positive the card should cross when looking at it in the holder we will return it still holdered. Sometimes these cards would still grade what the submitter wants, if they were submitted raw, but there maybe an issue with the card we simply can't fully examine while it is still holdered. As for this particular card I honestly dont know if we've seen it or not and therefore can shed no additional light on this auction and its guarantee.

Thank You for your interest in SGC,
Glyn Parson
SGC

Posted By: Paul Moss
I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm willing to bet that SGC is going to want that card out of the holder at that price sticker, witnessed by 3 notary publics, two supreme court judges, and a representative of the Pope, providing he is unavailable.
