Posted By: barrysloate
Alan- one of the collectors who posts on this board has an 1873 CdV of Lipman Pike, and it is almost certainly unique. Now that's a rare card. He is in full uniform as a member of Baltimore.

Posted By: Jay
Barry--The thing I don't understand is how you can determine the religion of these players when for some you don't even know their first names. Fischer on the Maroons is one example--no first name known, sounds Jewish to me.

Posted By: barrysloate
I know- lots of players sound Jewish, such as T206's Meyers and Zimmerman. But they're not. I think many early players would have hidden that fact, so I don't believe we know with certainty who all of them were.

I went to his Bar Mitzvah too.....

I also heard there is skepticism about Behel being Jewish....Didn't Rich Klein know something about that?

This might be my scarcest Jewish player card....from good ole Tik.....several years ago at a National.

Rare cards of Jewish players

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
A few years ago I won a lot of a dozen or so ZeeNuts on eBay. I immediately paid for the auction. The next day I get an email from a fellow up north, New York I think. He was desperate to have the 1928 Sid Cohen ZeeNut that was in the lot. He said name a price. I told him I'd like to wait until I got them, before I sold one. He emailed back saying he and his son were close to completing ZeeNuts, this Cohen was one of the few he lacked, and he'd pay $100 for it. It had typical wear...

I emailed a couple of collectors who I thought knew more about ZeeNuts than I, and they both thought it not a rare card, that Cohen was Jewish, but not a rarity. So I emailed the guy and said I'd sell, $100 instantly appeared in my Paypal account. And I sent the card out the same day.

My recollection is that I scanned the card before I mailed it. I'll post that if I find it.

Frank.

Posted By: boxingcardman
I am not so sure that the cards named all are rarer per se than the others in the issues but some of those issues are very tough and the Jewish players are especially in demand so they tend not to leave collections very often once they are picked up. That may account for a perception of extra scarcity in regard to cards that are not known to have been short printed or otherwise limited in their distribution.

My Solly Mishkin, for example, ain't going anywhere soon.
