T209-1; Player first names?
Posted By: Ed Ivey
I'm trying to learn more about these 16 men. Does anyone have a partial or full list of player first names? Thanks.

edivey@verizon.net

T209-1; Player first names?
Posted By: Seth B.
Here are the names that I have listed complete, though some (David Crockett or Dan McGeehan) sound too good to be true:
Chris Sisson
Daniel McGeehan
David Crockett
Charles Stubbe
H.H. Hoffman
John Cooper
John Cowell
Joseph Walsh

This is a fantastic set, much harder than you think to complete. Still the only set I'm really working on.

T209-1; Player first names?
Posted By: Ed Ivey
Thank you, Seth! It's nice to be able to put full names to the pictures. I had previously run the name Crockett through a major league search engine, yielding "Davey", who apparently had a one-month career in the bigs in 1901. Since he was born in Roanoke and died in Charlottesville, I figured it might be the one.

T209-1; Player first names?
Posted By: Seth B.
No problem, Ed. I thought "Davey Crockett" was just too good to be true, along with "Triple H" Hoffman, but that's the closest I can get. Crockett's card is really one of the dumpiest, most southern looking baseball cards I've ever seen. I'm surprised he doesn't have the dixie flag on his belt buckle:

I know some people on this board know a whole lot more about this set than I do (there are a pair of really cool postcard proofs that belong to a regular poster that you can probably find if you search for older postings about the set), but I've tracked these things for a few years and now have 9 of the 16 cards with a few doubles. You're welcome to e-mail me if you want to chat more.

T209-1; Player first names?
Posted By: Rhys Yeakley
I actually have 2 handwritten letters from Davey Crocket (the ballplayer) and another 50-60 scorecards and letters from players in this set that came from the estate of a player who JUST missed the T209 set somehow. He also played against Joe Jackson at Greenville. When I dig the letters out I will scan the Crocketts. He died in 1961 but I think the two I have are the lone signatures in the hobby. His English skills lead me to believe there is a reason he was not a prolific writer! Appearantly the Rocky Mount team was owned by some doctors who had a drug store etc. It is a fascinating league that very little is actually known about.

Rhys Yeakley

Posted By: Seth B.
Rhys- Thanks for the info, I would love to see scans of those letters. What do the scorecards look like, and when do they date to?

The T209 sets I and II are definitely prime for an OC magazine article. People on this board have done some really impressive digging about these cards and the early Carolina association and leagues.

Posted By: Ed Ivey
This is all great stuff guys - a research foundation to which I hope to add. Thank you all for responding. Rhys, I too would love to see scans of Davey's letters. For me, the relative obscurity of these players makes it all the more fascinating to learn about them.

Posted By: Vincent
. . . . as an interested party who would love to see what the rare signature of former Detroit Tigers Daniel "Davy" Crockett looks like.

That's probably about as close as I am going to come to acquiring one. But then, I thought the same thing about acquiring a Wish Egan signed letter too. Nine months later and I can say that I've added seven to my collection. So I guess, never say never. Regardless, I'd love you see your Crockett examples.

Many thanks.
