Posted By: <b>Bob</b><p>I am very biased when it comes to the brownies, I love the set and recognize collectors either love or hate them, very little room in the middle. I've noticed that not only are nicely graded commons starting to really rise in price but the scarce back cards appear to be taking off again after a respite. The Cycle backs, apparently strictly because of that beautiful red back, are really getting hot. Napoleon backs are really getting impossible to fond. Is it true that these cards only come in the anonamous backs? I have recruit backs for all the other cards of this series and my understanding is that Miller and Saier do not have a recruit back. Why is this? <br /><br />Ken

Posted By: <b>Bob</b><p>Some cards were not issued with Recruit/Napoleon backs. They are what is commonly called the "scarce series" or "tough backs." These cards were issued only with Cycle, Anonymous and Broadleaf cigarettes (backs) (and a few with Red Cross but that's a story for a different thread). Unfortunately for you, Saier and Ward Miller are very, very tough cards although Saier is not as tough as once thought. Ward Miller and Mike Donlin are arguably the 2 toughest T207s to find. I guess you can be glad Donlin was a Giant, not a Cub <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14>

Posted By: <b>bcornell</b><p>I still don't believe this set is taking off, Bob - there always seem to be just enough guys collecting it to make it pricey, but I've yet to see one of those unfortunate manias affect this set. If it happens, I'll be the first to welcome it.<br /><br />Many of the Recruit commons are still relatively cheap and those can get you most of the way in this set. The 13 HOFers are mostly easy to find, especially Johnson, Bresnahan, McGraw, Marquard. Wallace and McKechnie are bears - much tougher than Hooper or Speaker.<br /><br />Naps... yeah, they're tough to find, but the set is so hard to finish, I think of them as a distraction. I have one remaining and consider myself "done".<br /><br />My top 10 scarcest: Donlin, Ragan, Kuhn, Irving Lewis, Ward Miller, Saier, Ellis, Pelty, McCarthy, Wallace. Lowdermilk doesn't make this list. I didn't believe that Recruit backs were among the 10 toughest until I tried to finish the set and found cards like R.Miller, Woodburne, Bushelman, etc. were more plentiful than Wallace, Ellis, McKechnie, Easterly, Steele. Tim's VCBC article from a few years back was very accurate.<br /><br /><br />Bill

Tim's report has him somewhere in the middle, but I guess I never see him available. For higher profile players, I haven't seen Almeida and Cicotte around that much either.<br /><br />Folks tend to agree that Donlin is the toughest to find, but why would a card from the Recruit class be this tough?<br /><br />I'm pretty sure I've never been addicted to a set like this one. So tough and it's only 200 cards. Imagine if it were 500?<br /><br /><br /><br />
