t207 cards from Topps?

Posted By: Ken McMillan
Odd question but when I was searching ebay, I came across cards listed as topps t206 buyback series one cards from 2002. The cards were said to have original cards issued in 1910 to 1912 encased in current holders from topps. The scans also appear to have original cards inside a modernly made card. Does anyone know anything about these cards?

Ken

Topps issued t206 style cards as a 2002 product (like their 2005/2006 Turkey Red, Heritage releases, and the soon to be released Upper Deck Goudey set). Randomly inserted were some original t206 cards "encased" inside larger Topps made cards. They also did a t205 set with original t205's, and currently have Allen & Ginter where they do the same.

Condition is all over the place, but the originals aren't usually in very good shape. Paper loss (also heavy creasing, stains and pencil marks) seems to be common on many of them. You'll also pay more than the t206 cards inside are really worth, since people like the novelty of having an original old card inside a new card.

Posted By: Jeff D.
Well they are genuine cards. If the condition looks ok, and you don't mind paying a premium (or those bidding undervalue the actual card inside), it's certainly a way to get a t206 you need. It's just flimsy plastic that surrounds it on the front and back, so it shouldn't be too hard to get it out with a razor blade or scissors.

It's obviously not what Topps had in mind when they made the cards, but it probably wouldn't be the first time someone was to do that.

I actually haven't been watching the sales of those buybacks in a while, so maybe the prices have cooled down some and you can get a bargain. Topps collectors can be pretty ravenous, though.
