The National - What will you be looking for?

Posted By: Andy
Hi,
I don't post here very often but I read this board every day. I am very excited about this year National. This will be my second time (first was '04 Cleveland).
I am just curious what you guys will be shopping for. I will be looking for a centerpiece to my collection. My office recently won a raffle and my take was 700. Do any of you have any suggestions at what I could look for in that price range. I currently have 0 vintage in my collection, but I would like to turn my collection into that direction.

--Andy

Posted By: Jason L
What do you collect? Maybe there's a vintage piece that makes sense as a companion to your non-vintage collection? For instance, if you collect a certain team, maybe a T200 of them would make sense...a decent one should be around for that price.

Also, might suggest a nice low/mid-grade T206 Nap w/bat?!
a truly classic card.

If I were going to the National, I would be on the lookout for tobacco Cubbies...and bringing a few cards for onsite grading.

Posted By: Vincent
Perhaps I’m nuts, but instead of one centerpiece item; perhaps getting a substantial start on your vintage collection might provide more satisfaction than acquiring just one or two cards. For $700 or so, you could purchase quite afew common ballplayers, in lower grade. There should be a reasonable selection of early tobacco, gum, and candy cards available for under $30 or so. And with the National Show taking place in Cleveland, there may be a greater-than-usual abundance of Detroit Tiger cards, since Detroit is reasonably located within a 2-hours drive from Cleveland. As your vintage collection evolves, you may find that a particular vintage card will establish itself as the centerpiece you seek. For me, it was a 1914/1915 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb card that I set my sights on. The centerpiece changed as each prior target piece was acquired. The hunt certainly adds to the challenge and enjoyment of the hobby. Good Luck to you in Cleveland.

Posted By: Andy
Vincent,
Thank you for your response. I am mainly a set collector and that may vary well be the way to go. The Cracker Jacks are great cards. I am from the Buffalo area, so I am contemplating putting together a Buffalo Bisons T206 set which should be relatively inexpensive.

--Andy

Posted By: Vincent
Andy,

If you are looking for Buffalo team-related vintage cards in particular, I'd like to suggest one of my favorite sets; 1912 C46 Imperial. Some of the Buffalo members included are: "Natty" Nattress, Jake Gettman, Elijah Jones, Louis Brockett, "Lew" McAllister, Joseph Delehanty, John Kissinger, Robert Shaw, John White, Frank Corridon, George Schirm, Bayard Sharpe, William Malarkey, and Willaim Baxter. I may have missed someone(s) too. But the cards are generally not too expensive, and occassionally encountered. I'm not sure which of the players are the toughest to find (and therefore, perhaps much more expensive to purchase). I'm sure there are forum members who are much better educated on this set than I am. Perhaps they would share their insight and wisdom of what to expect to pay for certain cards.

Good luck on your search. It should be a great show.

Posted By: Andy
That is why this board is awesome. Vincent, thank you for the suggestion, I have never seen those cards before. I like the fact that they use actual photos of the players. I am going to have to spend some time with my Standard Catalog to come up with a check list of Buffalo players.

Thanks,
Andy
