Posted By: Brett
I was lucky enough to get 2 e98 Mathewson's (blue and orange)in poor shape fairly cheap, but I didn't know red backgrounds went for so much ! I'm still looking for a very low grade green background if anyone is willing to part with theirs :D

Posted By: Bob
Red has always been presumed to be the toughest color of the 4 e98 colors and I'll have to admit I haven't seen a red Matty before (mine are orange and blue), so that may be driving the price up, but on the other hand it doesn't seem to be doing much for the red Cobb which was about 1/3 the bid of the Matty, both SGC 10s with nice eye appeal.

Posted By: robert a
Nothing like a thread about how your card is selling for too much to hault the bidding.

No, but seriously I've been talking with more than a couple E98 collectors who are collecting the set and still need that matty to complete it.

It's a wonderful pose and was the last card I needed to complete my set.

Rob

Posted By: Bob
Rob, ouch, I didn't realize you were the seller. Please understand I never hinted the card was selling for too much, just relating that the caramel card market was still hot. My experience with the E98s is that Matty being Matty and Walsh are becoming almost impossible to find. I think this is due to their being HOFers and also because both cards are fairly tough in the set. The Matty in this condition with nice eye appeal but graded a 10 has doubled in one year.
I still think the Hippo Vaughn and Jack Coombs are the two toughest in the set though...

Posted By: robert a
Hi Bob,

Walsh sure is tough. I've owned a few walsh E98s, but never above poor condition. Not sure why, but he, like Tenny has tough cards from more than one issue.

I agree on Vaughn and Coombs and might throw Tenny in there with them.

What a fun set.

Rob
