Posted By: peter chao
This is a pretty silly scam, but unfortunately, I don't see any warning that the card is a reprint on either side of the card.

Peter

Posted By: barrysloate
It still astonishes me that even someone who knows absolutely nothing about baseball cards can't look at that Lewis card and realize "something doesn't make sense here." And yet it happens.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
No warning that the card is a reprint? How about the fact that the backside refers to the card in the past tense? Might that tip one off?

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
OK. I couldn't resist. I wrote and posed the following question:

"Hi. This card is interesting. Can you tell me how they knew it was worth $700 back in 1912 when it was printed? Thanks"

Response:

"I really dont know, I got it from my grandfather and had it for about 20 years. I do not know much about these cards, just going on what people have told me. Thanks for your comment."

Looks like Gramps made a shrewd investment.

Posted By: Peter Spaeth
The only thing I can think of here is that maybe the scan of the back was not posted when Peter C. made his comment? Peter? As for clues, how about the $700 value? Does that sound like something that would be printed contemporaneously in 1912? EDITED TO ADD WITH PROFOUND DISAPPOINTMENT Nope Pete C. said EITHER side of the card. Maybe he was just joking around and it didn't come out that way?

Posted By: Bobby Binder
I get calls and emails from people all the time that have these same cards with the prices on the back. I think they just don't know any better and have no idea what a real one would look like in the first place.

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
There is no mention of reprint on the back. How did this card's maker know that Honus would want it taken off the shelves. They must have had Wayback Machines. Dont you think.
