What's happening with mid-grade T206's?
 

Posted By: <b>Dave F</b><p>Is it just me or are the mid-grades (PSA 4-6's) falling off in prices? <br /><br />Many of the PSA 4's now seem will go for $40-45...5's will go for under $100 regularly, and 6's will go for under $200 quite often. Seems like last year at this time that wasn't the case, that 4's were consistantly going for $60+, 5's closer to $120-125 and 6's $225-$250.<br /><br />Am I wrong? Anybody have any idea why? Just the time of the year or are more people focusing on low grades and high grades?

BUT i see RISING prices in rarities (the demmitts, oharas, elberfelds, lundgrens, etc, etc.), and rare backs are stronger than ever, as well...collectors always seem to come back to "basics"...rarity, rarity, rarity...

I realize the foundation of the hobby is to collect sets, and I admire that, but type collecting of scarce cards I really enjoy has been berry berry good to me.....I remember picking up my Uzit, raw but probably would grade a 5 (maybe high end 4), for about $350 from an antique dealer that bought a type collection. Love the T206 backs too....as for prices on t206 commons and high end cards I will defer to the experts on the board....If anyone ever goes to see what I have for sale it won't be too many t205 or t206.....though they are great sets it's just not what I enjoy....best regards and happy collecting....

I think a lot of the run-up was the desire of a dozen or so individuals to try and complete an EX or better set, and sometimes as the upgrades came in, there was more that they had to sell. And definitely T-206 is one of those sets that seems to get ever-increasing number of cards graded. A fairly significant number of raw sets have been graded out over the past few years, leading to spikes in VG/EX - EX/MT material available for most commons.<br /><br />But I think the historic context is still pretty strong. It was only a few years ago that a MINT 9 from the set would go for $1,000, give or take.

I am asking less than sell prices for a year ago on a Lajoie throwing - no bites. Also a nice Cobb red for less than some closes a year ago - no bites. And a Young, glove for less than closes last year - no bites yet.<br /><br />Hmmmm, my cards are reasonably prices, especially compared to other ebay store sellers who are asking the moon. <br /><br />Yes, in this minor market segment, we are experiencing a bear. I don't quite understand as supply on ebay is very very limited if at all. Demand must be slumping - maybe all the set registry guys now have their PSA 5 HOF'ers, don't need 'em like they did a year ago.<br /><br />Steve

Posted By: <b>Jimmy</b><p>There will be a price change and you will see higher prices (2009-2011), but not the same as past years like 2000 and 2001. This will be interesting to follow, but overall the hobby is in good shape, many new collectors are coming into the hobby, still need more kids and parents to be involved. The bad news is that many of the older dealers will move on and start selling more product, but will there be enough people in the hobby to keep prices consistent.<br /><br />Jimmy<br />

It's not only on T206's, but almost everything else with the exception of a few of the rarest issues. I think more people are enjoing outside activities instead of sitting inside behind a key board. I'm sure they will be back up. New collectors of this card type are popping up every day. I've only been doing this since January (6 months). <br /><br />And I'm 30.

A sustained drop in prices seems unlikely when the average-aged T206 collector has not reached his prime earning years.<br /><br />One way to safeguard against a sustained price drop is to be better ambassadors for the hobby. We all promote the hobby by buying cards and participating on this board. But much more can be done in the way of research, writing and public speaking (which gives the hobby more legitimacy)--and just sharing the hobby with friends and family.
