Posted By: Steve f
FYI This long time seller has a few genuine Sal. Exhibits in the mix, but I believe his W516s etc are color copies. Of course his CJ's and Goudeys are.

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=016&sspagename=STRK%3AME WN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=260102097670&rd=1&rd=1</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=016&sspagename=STRK%3AME WN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=260102097670&rd=1&rd=1</a>

*added pic of his past auction;

Posted By: Joann
RC,

The Galasso (sp?) reprints had text identifying them as reprints in between "Goudey Gum Co." and "Boston" on the back of these cards. Often reprints are marred or stained in this exact area to hide the fact that it's a reprint. Scan below is a reprint, and you can see the tiny words in this spot - they say "Renato Galasso reprint" or something like that. Some reprints also had the word "Reprint" as the very last line, under "Indian Gum".

If you look at the seller's closed auction, check out the ended auction for the 33 Goudey Swanson. In this one, the marring between "Gum Co.' and "Boston" is pretty obvious.

Joann

Top is with reprint text between Co and Boston, middle is with reprint noted at bottom of card. Bottom card is back of genuine card.

Edited so description of cards matched layout of scans.

Posted By: Steve f
RC, To add to Joann's thorough description,

Galasso also reprinted T cards... Another method, some counterfeits are photos of real cards printed with 'high-def' laser scanners. Easy to spot these in hand, not so on a computer screen.

If you're unsure about an card, please show it AFTER the sale (but, before payout)-as a courtesy to those collectors looking for a bargain (me).

Incidentally, While most uneducated sellers will correct an auction when exposed, this particular scammer refused to disclose this or accept proof. Even when advised days in advance.
he replied with an immature comment I like to call 'the kiss of death'.

eBay stresses to sellers when listing, that 'iffy' or non-graded material must be labeled as non-authentic. This guy knew what he was doing.

http://www.cycleback.com has some terrific info on this stuff. Steve F

Posted By: RC
Sorry but another question,

I purchased this Mickey Cochrane that has red ink bleed through to the back. Is this fairly common? The seller's lot was full of the same effect.

I have 145 of the '33 set that I am sure are authentic, I did find a couple that had similar bleed to the back.

IMG][/IMG]

RC

Posted By: Bill
That is normal to find the ink on the back like that. When the cards were printed, sheets would be laid down on top of other sheets that had not fully dried yet, hence the faded ink look. I sometimes look for that on the back of an ungraded '33 Goudey in order to find out if it's real or not.

Change your socks, drink water, and drive on.
