Today the bidder called me and said he placed the bid in error. While I do not generally allow a bid retraction, I have decided to allow him in this case to retract.

So the current bid on lot #64 is $993. I apologize if this inconvenienced anyone in any way. Thank you.

No big deal, I was only going to bid on the one item, but I hope others are not having the same problem.

Best wishes,

Joe

Besides, you sound like a loser, so why should I care?

I will be working on invoices this morning, and will post final bids on the website this afternoon. Nice cowardly post...if you an issue with Barry or his auction give him a call. Keep it off of the forum.

How did you arrived at the rookie designation? Wasn 't his Old Judg card clearly issued before this one? I am not trying to nitpick, I just want to know if I am overlooking something.

Posted By: barrysloate
Thanks to all for the kind words. Some of the prices were great, but for those who did their homework there were some good deals too.

Harry- both the Old Judge and N28 were issued in 1887...not sure which was first. Fair point.

James- not trying to be antagonistic, but that Sparky character just sounded like one of the barnacles of life, someone who is just bitter and frustrated and takes it out on others. What part did you find compelling? Since you posted your name, happy to field any questions

Posted By: Mark
I believe Hal Lewis proved that n28s were issued in 1888. Your n28 John Clarkson card is good proof of that since it pictures Clarkson in a Boston uniform and Clarkson played for Chicago for the entire 1887 season. And Harry's correct that there is an 1887 n172 Clarkson depicting him on the White Sox.

Posted By: James Feagin
Barry--I respect your option to run your auction in any way you please. In this era of fast-paced technology, and even more impatient people, I can imagine that bidders not having instant access to information or communication must be frustrating to them. The days of the phone bid seem archaic, even though it is nostalgic to so many. Your prices realized are steller, however, I personally prefer to deal with online auction houses with the 30 minute rule on each lot. That way I know how I stand on each time, how much time is left, and I can budget as such. Just my thought and I'm glad you're happy with how it went.

James

Posted By: Cat
Congrats Barry!!! Those prices are amazing. Somehow your format must appeal to the high-end (wealthy) collector. I actually appreciate different auction formats. My feelings are that if a bidder wants to know where an item is at...call him. He's the one that has to exert the manpower to answer the phone. The phone call costs me about as much time as clicking around on the internet.

Barry, I hope you decide to have auctions on a more regular basis. Quarterly??

Posted By: James Feagin
Absolutely. However, the internet does provide more flexibility and those problems we encountered that night have been fixed. Every form of communication medium has those problems. I just feel the only way phone auctions can provide what most customers are looking for is if there is a call back service. In no way am I impuning Barry's auction, it's just my opinion.

James

Posted By: James Feagin
Hardly checkmate John. Our customers and consignors were almost universally satisfied with how we handled ourselves during that time. Jerry was trying to be snappy where a problem existed for less than a day. Sparky remarked that phone systems are archaic and don't allow for instant communication. He also mentioned that Lew Lipset even runs an internet auction. While his tone was nasty, the point was taken. I personally think Barry is a credit to the hobby, and how he wants to run his auctions are fine by me. From my own collecting viewpoint though, telephone auctions just don't allow me the flexibility.
