Question on value and year?????

We ended up with a box full of old newspapers, pictures etc. In the box we found these old baseball cards, we know there old but not exactly how old. Most all of them have names and read Piedmont and Sweet Capporal on the one has no back.We found this site via the web and ope you dont mind us asking?? Anyhow we ware thinking of selling the cards on ebay soon to offset (Wedding Bills!!!!) and would like to know what we should ask for the cards and expect, any help would be greatly appreciated. <br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />April Parkerqus

To answer your Question though, without being graded by a 3rd party Company, or seein the backs(Are they clean Backs? ie.. No Stains, markings, etc...?) They would probably go for 30 - 60 bucks each, except the one I'm interested in, the one with the Cross hair markings, thats probably the one with nothing on the back!? It's a Printer Scrap, Proof. Posted By: <b>Dan Kravitz</b><p>Hi April- This is an easy one. You now know what you have and what it's worth. DO NOT have these graded. You will spend more on grading than the cards are worth. The people who are interested in your cards (if sold on Ebay), will know they are real. The trick is to sell them in the right catagory... Home> Buy> Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop> Cards> Baseball-MLB> Singles (Pre-1930).. The auction will determine true value.<br />Good luck, and by the way, lose the attic and Grandma story. It won't play well with your audience.<br />

Posted By: <b>Frank Wakefield</b><p>Well I just dug out my little box of white border cards... there is not one with the pose of that proof card.<br /><br />Zach Wheat was in 20 games in 1909, and 156 in 1910. Joe Jackson was in 5 games in 1908, 5 in 1909, 20 in 1910, and 147 in 1911. Jackson's not in enough games in 1910 to make the 460 series in T206. <br /><br /><br />So my thinking is that April's proof card there is of Joe Jackson, and it may well have a series 550 back. I wonder which factory. Maybe she could scan the back for us.<br /><br />Happy new year.<br /><br />Frank

I figured there was a 50-50 chance it was a joke, but the worst thing that could happen is I would look silly. That's a small price to pay for the chance the card was real.

Well thought out and constructed.<br /><br />But I'm far from sure, and will continue to watch this thread with interest just in case. I have no clue who the person is or is supposed to be. Does the same image appear anywhere else in vintage cards? <br /><br />Joann<br /><br />ETA: Actually, I think I might be more hopeful that it is an AF joke than not. Because if it is, it's really art. Putting a proof among scans of commons was great. Much more subtle that way.

I think these might be on the up and up....She said she wanted to do ebay...I convinced her (hi April) to let us auction them from the board....At the end she will send them to me...I will make sure they get authenticated by SGC and we can continue to do the deal. These things look to be fantastic. If you don't think these are real that is fine...but they look to be good to me....let the auction continue....

Posted By: <b>Frank Wakefield</b><p>Yes sir, I can... but you have to wait. It's at the bank. And I can't get it Monday, I'm going to Cincy for my Opening Day pilgrimage. I just happened to have a scan of the back on my old pc.<br /><br />But it looks just like that proof card above, only without the lines, and with "Jackson, Cleveland Amer." at the bottom of the front. My recollection is that the image has a tiny scratch across the top left-hand corner. Barry's Jackson card has a better image. See if he'll scan his.<br /><br />Ted Z had a tough time finishing his Piedmont only set... took him a while to get all of the 550s. Partly due to rarity. And partly because they're always found in nice shape. The later series usually aren't found as worn as the 150s. And the nicer condition drives price up. Old Ted is still fuming about what he had to pay for a couple of them.<br /><br />Frank.

I don't think Leon would persuade a novice to auction a potential million dollar card on this board. <br /><br />Absolutely terrific photo shop work. I didn't make the Joe Jackson connection initially, but was wondering how in the world a single proof could end up in an attic find.

Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>Well, I have an extraordinary story to share with everyone on the board, and I don't even know where to begin.<br /><br />I know today is April Fool's day, and I realize this story seems too good to be true. But I have to tell everyone that April does exist, that she does have these baseball cards, and that if it authenticates it will be the highlight lot of my June auction. Sometimes stories defy the imagination, and this is one of them.<br /><br />When I woke up early this morning and saw this post, I immediately emailed her. I too was skeptical but she got back to me and sounded perfectly legitimate. The first thing I said to her is that it is not unusual to find a group of T206's that are still in a family's possession, but the appearance of any printer's proof would be. Then she told me exactly what I was hoping to hear- that her husband's grandfather spent his life in the printing business and that these cards originated from him. We continued talking, I directed her to my website, and she became very excited about the prospect of auctioning the card.<br /><br />I called a very close friend of mine in the Virginia area who has collected tobacco cards for years, and asked him if he knew the town she lived in, and said it was about forty minutes from him. I asked him if he was willing to drive over there today (of course with the promise of a hefty finder's fee) and he got there about 11:00 this morning. He called me shortly thereafter and confirmed that everything about it was consistent with how a T206 should look- color, paper stock, etc.<br /><br />At this moment we are in possession of this card and it will arrive here on Tuesday. I will immediately head out to SGC to have it authenticated. If it passes muster, and so far it looks like it will, it will be the highlight of my upcoming June auction.<br /><br />This has been a whirlwind day and my heart is going at double speed. If all works, this will be the greatest find I have ever made. I think it is one of these situations where sometimes something that looks too good to be true may actually be true. Please all wish me luck. I will keep you posted.

Monkeys Eyebrow is a tiny little town in western Kentucky, just west of Paducah. It is in Ballard County, near the Ohio River. A goodly stash of T210s, those beautiful red border cards, all were series 6, the Bluegrass League, as could be expected. The old gentleman had a bunch of Kitty League post cards... and then about 200 T206 series 550 cards, all Piedmont. He even had a few still in the packs! Some dealers up north swooped down on the fellow. Mr. Mint didn't make it there, he stayed the night at Metropolis, a bit to the west. I'm guessing the gambling boats attracted him, but maybe Mr. Mint is a big Superman fan... either way, the cards were gone before Mr. Mint arrived.<br /><br />Barry, Leon, are either of you aware of Piedmont 550s being found anywhere else???<br /><br />Frank.
