Preferential treatment by grading companies?
 

Posted By: <b>Cobby33</b><p>Is it just me, or do others feel that non-dealers and casual sumbitters get screwed on low-quantity submissions?<br /><br />I've recently received several decent-to-nice cards back from PSA and GAI with horrid grades. Some of the newer cards (straight from packs) were graded 6's and 7's and a Croft's Cocoa I submitted received an "Auth," whilst I have purchased several like-examples from dealers with much higher grades.<br /><br />Thoughts?

Posted By: <b>Dave</b><p>I definately think some of the big dealers on ebay selling graded cards get deals...some of them look a grade or two higher than what they should...I just shake my head...I don't ever get that lucky....but, I only submit 5-7 cards at a time.

Posted By: <b>Scot Reader</b><p><br />I'm not a big time customer but I think I usually get a fair shake from PSA. Some cards come back graded higher that expected, some worse. I think the reason a lot of the big boys get better grades is that they have ample funds to liberally resubmit. If you submit an EX-looking card three times you have a better chance of getting it into a five holder than if you only submit it once. Scot

But I think the most anyone could get is a half grade bump for a card midway between two grades. You are not going to get a NR MT with four soft corners no matter who you are. And if the graders are asked to holder trimmed cards, that will come back to bite them because at least one service offers refunds on cards that are misrepresented. So I am a little less cynical than most.

You know take a 1000 cards and submit them as a potentially big client \ dealer and see what you get; then break them up into groups of 5 and send them in as collectors individual pieces and compare the two. <br /><br />While I prefer BGS on modern cards I'm horrified they have actually "suggested" that past cards be resubmitted for better grades. Its equally alienating that PSA won't give certain cards a "10" because there are already enough of them (70's and 80's era cards). That is just a rumor of course.
