Posted By: Dan Bretta
Somebody is actually going to pay $46 for that? I could see maybe paying for a T208 as a filler or a cheap typecard, but wow.....

Wow...$46 thats a deal for that rat chewed Cobb card...LOL

just for fun....what does anyone think a Wagner in the same condition would sell for ? In 1997 I saw a Wagner with Sweet cap back sell for $10,000, and it looked almost as bad as this Cobb card

Posted By: Chris Counts
As a longtime admirer of flawed cards, I thought the buyer got a great deal. Despite being one of the most hammered cards I've ever seen, it has surprising visual appeal. I'd take it over a nicer condition strip card anyday ...

Posted By: Brian
very funny, guys. I could not stop laughing when I saw this auction....Would love to see it slabbed by one of the 'big three' and resold on eBay for even more money--that would be icing on the cake.

Posted By: Kenneth A. Cohen
How do we know that some dastardly fiend hasn't torn off and combined two pieces from two different intact Cobb cards to put this masterpiece together? If such was the case, it would surely be rejected by a grader as "altered."

I smell a scam!!!

In 1997 I saw a Wagner with Sweet cap back sell for $10,000, and it looked almost as bad as this Cobb card"

The Wagner You refer to was sold by Levi Bleam in 1997. I believe it was the first card PSA graded as authentic. There was much more to that card then there is of that cobb, and what was there was in one piece. I believe it actually sold closer to 8k. I wish i had bought the card at the time. You could make a tidy profit in todays market.

Posted By: Max Weder
As the card is presumably authentic, I'm not sure why anyone should quibble with paying a price for a card that is similar to the cost of a NYC net54 dinner for 1 person (beer, wine, dessert and latte excluded). If anything, it's a great conversation piece (the card, as well as the dinner)

However, I really want to know how Chuck got that great photo for his My Ebay page.

Max

Posted By: Joann
I thought this was a sad day for the Net54 community. This card won the last Beater War, and it would have been nice to keep it in the family. I made a half-hearted bid to try to save it, just so I could post it in the RPU thread and maybe be a contender in the next BW.

Joann

Posted By: Bryan
That was my card. Congrats on buying it Chuck.

I had it framed and hung on my office wall for the past couple of years. It was a great reminder that even the most insignificant decisions today can have great implications tomorrow.

The card does have incredible eye appeal. If nothing else just the fact that it is an original Cobb in two pieces draws your attention. Personally I think it was well bought at $50.

As for getting it slabbed, not going to happen. I thought about it too. Problem is it would be very hard to keep one piece from sliding behind the other.

Enjoy the card. It will be in the mail tomorrow.

Bryan
Posted By: Mike
All right, I have been a lurker for a while now, but finally couldn't hold back any longer.

I bet there is a great story behind this Cobb, that could go in its frame:
- Once owned by a jilted girlfriend
- From the personal collection of "Home Run" Baker
- A magic trick gone horribly wrong
- Mistakenly used with the original Polar Bear tobacco
- The worst '80s trim job ever

I actually think it is a pretty cool piece there, and at least it was described right on ebay. I have seen some ebay sellers that would have described it as "ex-mt! any scratches or blemishes are just the result of my scanner."

Anyways, back to my lurking. Love the board, and the wealth of info and scans I get to enjoy from you guys.

Posted By: Joann
Hahaha. Thanks for the laugh Mike. Any blemishes are on my scanner, not the card. hee. And congratulations Chuck - you've picked up a classic card, and I'm glad it's still connected to Net54.

Joann
