Thoughts on this Rosy Ryan Photocard

Posted By: fkw
I just picked this up.

It is a ca.1922 real photo printed on a glossy deckle edged "VELOX" photopaper, 4.5" by 2.75" (scan below is lifesize)

On back is handwritten "BILL RYAN" in pencil.

From my short research the "VELOX" style name (printed on the back at an angle) was used on the 1920-30s.

My question. At first I though it was just a vintage photograph by a fan or something. But the photo is such a nice clean portrait, I thought it might be some type of premium, maybe from the ball park??

Anyone have anything similar?

Posted By: leon
Does the paper have a photograph type feel or 85 year old, glossy paper type feel? It looks like a nice photo from the scan...certainly nicer than most I have seen....(which isn't really a ton)...

Posted By: davidcycleback
The photo is from circa 1940s, obviously reusing an old photo. It's a standard snapshot style from the period. There were professional photographers like Jim Rowe and George Brace who sold commercially snapshot sized photos of old time players, and they often used later generation images like this. I don't know that that's the case with this photo, but it's conceivable.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I believe David is correct on this one. Snapshot photographs are a focus of my collection and these types of photos pop up occasionally.

Posted By: fkw
After doing more research I think David and Dan are right. Actually one of the better pages I found on internet was one of David's (below).

http://www.cycleback.com/photoguide/stamps.html (Photo Paper Branding)

Im going to call it 1940's. Its a nice image and obviously from the look of the pose done from a professionals negative and not just a casual fan. The photo itself is in nice shape, but does show crazing through out the image especially seen when turned at angle into the light. Its nice and I spent less than $10, so its no big deal it isnt from the 1920's.

Thanks for all your help.
