sgc 84?
Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
Sorry it's postwar but this strikes me as an example of a card where SGC's grade is way too generous in light of the centering.

Even if it is not 75/25, that particular issue may have a slight exemption?

It is a myth that SGC centering standards are less stringent that PSA's. Just look at the grading scale descriptions. It was true when SGC first started. At that time, they did not even have centering tolerances listed in their grading scale. However, that was changed several years ago.

I do think the black insert makes poor centering jump out. Meaning a 70/30 card in an SGC holder will visually appear less centered than a 70/30 card in a PSA holder.

No, more like 95/5.

As for centering for PSA/SGC, I think PSA is more lax on L/R centering than T/B centering. SGC seems not to be stringent in centering up to SGC 86. It's not tough to find an SGC 86/84 that aren't well-centered, but rarely does one find an SGC 88 with bad eye-appeal vis-a-vi centering.

What's good is that a scan usually explains the grade and the eye-appeal right off the bat.

Here's a scan of a poorly L/R centered PSA 7. The L/R oc'ness seems to be ok with PSA for their 7 grade, but not usually the T/B.
