Posted By: Joe JonesYou should check out the Old Cardboard link at the top of this page. Spend some time there and see which sets you like. There are many sets that can be completed over time that will not break the bank, especially in low grade.

Posted By: dennis1989 topps <img src="/images/happy.gif" height=14 width=14> joe's idea of looking at the OC website is what you should do. but really ,there is no vintage (pre wwII) set that is really cheap and easy to do. low grade 35 goudey or diamond stars w/o the last High #'s,come to mind but even these aren't cheap! really the thing to do is find a set you really like and work at it and maybe in the years to come your funds to spend will become larger and that set will become more obtainable.

Posted By: Al C.risafulliI'd second the vote for 1935 Goudey. Without getting into all the different puzzle combinations, you could probably complete a set in VG-EX for $3500 or so. I sold a set about a year ago, minus one common, in about VG condition, for $2300. I also think 1941 Double Play in off-grades is underappreciated and not too expensive. Diamond Stars (minus the high numbers) are also a good bet - the lack of a Ruth or Gehrig has kept those prices down, even in the EX range, and the cards are absolutely gorgeous. The other thing about Diamond Stars that's nice is that the stock is very heavy, so it's very possible to find these cards raw in great shape. The low numbers are a challenge (and the high numbers are a BEAR), but the set is conquerable. Of course I think the best value in prewar cards are in the Goudey and National Chicle premiums of the 1930s. Without getting into all the variations, it's possible to build a nice set of Goudey Wide Pens or Chicle Fine Pens fairly inexpensively, and the cards are beautiful, and relatively plentiful. They're challenging because there are a decent number of cards, but nothing so ridiculously expensive that it's going to crush you. EDIT: now that I think about it, if you stay in the 1930s/1940s, there are a lot of options that won't hobble you - Playballs are pretty affordable in low to mid grades, and 1934 Goudey isn't too horrible (although there are two Gehrigs to contend with). 1938 Goudey isn't so bad in lower grades, although there are a lot of HOFers (and two cards of each) to contend with. 1948 Bowman isn't horribly priced and there are some really nice cards there as well. Posted By: BobJim- I agree with you but with one hige caveat: there is a card in the set of a player named Levey which is almost impossible to find because all the Jewish-player collectors out there have him high on their hit lists. I had to overpay through the nose to get one in good condition. Otherwise, I agree with your assessment because it is a doable set although there are some land mines in the set as far as scarcely offered cards. tbob

Posted By: mikei was looking into the r314 set and i was wondering if someone had a list of all the players. i saw that their were A cards, B cards, C cards, and D cards, and i didnt know if those were variations or exactly what cards are needed to complete the set. could anybone help out with that? thanks alot.

Posted By: fkwThere are 5 sets in the R314, with 3 fairly small. R314A has 120 different cards in set, have "Litho USA" on bottom corner, very common. R314B-1 has 24 in the set, they are borderless, and a smaller thick cursive name, scarce. R314B-2 24 in set, same as above but has a border, scarce. R314C "Canadian Creamy" 25 in the set, has a yellowish creamy tone card stock with a light gloss, slightly scarce. R314D (V352) 47 in the set, slightly yellowish, no gloss, (8 Detroit players, rest are International Leaguers from Montreal and Toronto), very rare. <img src="http://members.aol.com/canofprimo/r314ab.jpg"><img src="http://members.aol.com/canofprimo/r314cd.jpg"> R314A, R314B-1, R314C, R314D
