Barry Sloate Auctions Begins Oct 30
Posted By: barrysloate
My current telephone auction is currently up for preview at www.sloateauction.com and will begin tomorrow Oct 30 at 10:00 AM for bidding. We will be updating prices each evening and will also accept email bids every day except the closing night of Nov 16. We have a nice selection of 19th century cards and photographs, 20th century tobacco and candy cards, high grade 1930's gum cards, and a nice group of Cuban issues. This is my first auction in a year and I know that many of you haven't bid with me before. If you receive a catalog in the mail you are registered; if you are new you can email me at bsloate@att.net or call at 718-855-7513 weekdays between 10:00 AM and 6:00PM. I look forward to speaking with everyone, especially those who are regular contributors on network54. Good luck to all. Best regards, Barry Sloate

Posted By: barrysloate
I know the PSA 3 Plank in the Goodwin Auction went in the 40K ballpark, and I think this one is stronger. However, whoever won his won't be bidding anymore. So it's a tough call. I will guess 30K-35K, but who knows. It just depends who is out there.

Posted By: Hal Lewis
In a nutshell..

I kept going through Barry's auction looking for the "low interest" items... and NEVER found them!

It's almost like I could bid on the lot numbers WITHOUT knowing what the cards are and still be happy in the end with WHATEVER I won!

Very refreshing to see such good stuff in a small personal auction.

Posted By: barrysloate
Peter- I was told that the Anderson was rare even among the other square Ramlys, but couldn't confirm it. Keep in mind this was from a shoebox find that had a grand total of three Ramlys. What are the odds of that?

Posted By: Ryan Christoff
Hal,

Since you found yourself straying too far from your "rookie HOF's" I'd love to see the Billiken Lloyd that you replaced your Tomas Gutierrez with. Do you have a scan?

Also, if you have a chance, I'd love if you'd share scans of your Ray Dandridge and Leon Day upgrades with us. They must be pretty nice since the ones you consigned are both decent examples.

Good call on consigning the Hilton Smith. As you know, that's NOT his rookie card. Same with the Dihigo you consigned. That's also NOT his rookie card.

Thanks in advance for sharing those scans.

-Ryan

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Sorry, I know you love the Cuban stuff as much as anyone in the world, and I salute you for it...

but the lustre went out of it for me when the HOF recently inducted a ton of new Negro leaguers who don't have any cards (or maybe only have some rare Cuban cards).

I figured that since I can never get all of them, why keep working on a "set" that can't be finished.

Thus, I am giving someone else an opportunity to own these great Cuban cards. I am sure there are collectors like yourself who will appreciate them more than I do, or who need them for their collections more than I do.

And how do I say this as nicely as possible...

but what business is it of yours what I collect or sell or trade or buy?

|
Barry Sloate Auctions Begins Oct 30
Posted By: Ryan Christoff
Hal,

You're right, it's none of anyone's business what you collect or consign or whatever. That is, until you start posting about it. If you want privacy, don't post on the board. Don't be so transparent when you enthusiastically rave about an auction when you are really just trying to advertise your own items you consigned. There are plenty of collectors with incredible collections that want and have privacy.

I was going to continue this post and reference the fact that earlier in the thread you talked about how you were changing the focus of your collection. I was going to point out that it's legitimate for curious board members to ask you a question about something when you post about it. I was going to point out a few other oddities but I see you have, once again, gone back and edited your posts to cover your tracks.

You know, Hal, I normally think of David as "King of the Edit," but his many edits are generally his attempts to further clarify his point, or better explicate his position or opinion. It seems they are always innocent edits that are not meant to deceive anyone or hide what he previously said. They are not attempts to gain plausible deniability or give him some kind of "out" when he finds himself caught in a web of his own deceit.

In fact, since I first noticed your habit of doing that (years ago) I have not edited a single post of mine, even when I notice I left out a word or spelled something wrong. Sometimes edited posts can lose some credibility in my eyes. Depending on whose post it is, sometimes edited posts lose ALL credibility to me.

Yes, whether it be Josh Gibson's son/not-his-son, collecting/not-collecting rookie HOFers or simply perfecting the art of revisionist history, you, Hal, are truly the KING OF THE EDIT.

And for that, I salute you.

-Ryan

Posted By: Hal Lewis
Jeff, I was answering your question in a manner that would not subject me to exactly what you and others are jumping on.

It's a Catch-22.

You don't want me talking about what cards I have in the auction... but then you ask me what cards I have in the auction?

How can I answer WITHOUT doing that?

Barry Sloate Auctions Begins Oct 30
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Since when did I suggest I didn't want you to talk about the cards you are consigning? I asked you a very simple, straightforward question: "Do you have any cards consigned in Barry's auction?" I made it a simple question so that you would not later claim you did not understand it or were somehow fooled. Alas, your answer has changed in just a few hours. How providing a partial, untrue answer would prevent you from being criticized is beyond me.

Hal, no one wants you to not talk about cards. We all appreciate the knowledge you have and when you share it with the rest of us. That is undisputed. However, I understand that it is easier to play the victim when you feel you are being attacked - in that way you can deflect the attack without having to address the reason FOR the purported attack. I think the problem Ryan has with you - and many others over time - is that you tend to be duplicitous. You go on and on, in a manner some might deem to be ad nauseum, about an auction and tend to ignore others. Many people then note that the auctions you rave about ad nauseum are the ones in which you have a financial interest. I don't think anyone has a problem with it if you just bothered to be upfront and honest about your interests. It's like on CNBC, when a guest analyst discusses a stock he or she is required to disclose any financial interest he or she may have in that stock. I'm guessing you understand this concept. I remember when Julie had some cards up in the REA auction, she repeatedly, and good-naturedly, beat the drums for HER cards. It was upfront, transparent and honest - and still some people took it the wrong way. As for your happy days away from the board, I'm sure you had much happier things to deal with while away. I'd hate for anyone here to cause you any undue pain.

Barry Sloate Auctions Begins Oct 30
Posted By: Hal Lewis
Jeff:

You said: "I don't think anyone has a problem with it if you just bothered to be upfront and honest about your interests."

Unfortunately, that is NOT the case. If someone posts anything on this board about a card they are selling, it is immediately removed.

Obviously this is necessary in order to keep the board from being flooded with "Please buy my Cuban cards" threads.

BUT...

I think there is a BIG difference between hawking particular cards...

and calling attention to an entire auction (being run by a respectable board member) in which my cards make up a very small percentage of the inventory.

Remember...

these are vintage card auctions and this is a vintage card discussion board.

Thus, the odds of certain posters have items for sale in every auction is very high...

as are the odds of certain posters trying to BUY items in every auction.

The "buyers" have an interest in keeping auctions "in the dark" so that they might find some bargains.

Is this any less "beneficial to their financial interests?" I don't think so.

**[For Ryan: The Edit was to change "Not to me" in the final line of text to "I don't think so." I would underline the changes for you in red if so allowed.]
Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Hal, do you have any cards consigned in Charlie's auction?
|
Barry Sloate Auctions Begins Oct 30
Posted By: Hal Lewis
NO.

Only the few in Barry's and a few going to Mastro.

If I decide to put one or two things in the REA next Spring, I might.

I've never actually used any auctions for selling other than Mastro and REA... but I wanted to give Barry a shot at selling these since he is such a nice guy and has done some favors for me.

Irrespective of my financial interests... I truly am impressed with the stuff he is selling.

He has a TON of items that will get more interest and more $$ than the ones I am selling.

Posted By: Peter Spaeth
It really is annoying when one posts in response to another post, and the original poster then goes back and changes what you were responding to. What's the point? If people aren't comfortable with what they said originally, don't say it at all. It's legitimate to edit to fix typos, or to clarify a thought, but editing well after the fact to make a subsequent poster look foolish to others trying to follow the thread is lame.
