Boston Garters question

Posted By: jackgoodman
I've become a big fan of the Garter cards and have appreciated those that have posted images. I came across this image from a Trader Speaks and was wondering why the card didn't look like the ones posted in the past - i.e. a player in a room in his shorts, with garters showing. Is this another Garters set and is there a designation for differentiating between the two? Thanks.

Boston Garters question

Posted By: davidcycleback
The Boston Garters were issued over three consecutive years, with each year's issue having a different design. The first two were art/graphic-style, while the third year's was a straight photo design. All issues are rare.

Boston Garters question

Posted By: Dan Koteles
the first year color is the suitcase as most know . 2ND is theplayer is situated in the ball diamond frame and the 3rd B&W issue which I do not have. I have 2 suitcase and 3 diamond frame.

Yes Brian ,I do feel lucky with these, especially being a mid- level guy.The one shown above of course is the B&W ,which I would like to have, but have not pursued ,due to being a color collector.

The only good thing of B&W is that they show what the player really looks like. I LIKE COLOR, the first 2 yrs 1912-13 give me
this satisfaction. The diamond frame has different color belts at the bottom....SPeaker has a peachish backgroung and Herzog some
cranberry and pink, really nice graphics.

Thanks for the post !
Boston Garters question

Posted By: bruce Dorskind

There are less than 120 Boston Gaters known.

The first year color series(1912( with the suit care is far and away the rarest.
At least one card had never been seen. Albeit all cards have been
seen on the advertising posters which have appeared in a cadre
of different auctions (see Robert Edward auctions-2005)

The next series appeared in 1913 and this is the more common
color cards. Usually 3-5 of these cards appear in major auctions
each year.

Finally, two years later a small series of black and white (sometimes
seen as sepia green cards appear).

We are fortunate to own a large number of Boston Garters including the
only uncut sheet ever found of 1912 players. This sheet has been
featured in several major books on collecting and includes 4 players.

There are a number of articles that have been publsihed on the Garters
including an infamous Trader Speaks article auhtored by legendar
St. Louis collector Charles Buck Barker.

Should you wish any additional information, please feel to write to us.

bdorskind@dorskindgroup.com

Boston Garters question

Posted By: Lyman
Jack, in case you missed it, a profile page on the Old Cardboard website (under the "All Others" tab on the nav bar or go to H813 Boston Garter) includes a brief table that shows front and back examples and compares all three BG subsets. They are designated as H813 in the American Card Catalog. --Lyman
