Posted By: fkw
Are you sure it was an Exhibit card? I cant think of a horizontal Cobb Exhibit. But there are horizontal Postcards of Cobb, like the PC773-2 H.M. Taylor Cobb, among others.

Posted By: Ben
might be the Wolverine News Cobb he's referring to. Aren't there two Cobb poses in that set, portrait and horizontal batting?

Posted By: Ben
Sorry, I meant the Key Taylor PC when I said Wolverine News. Is this the one you're referring to? (scan from the vintageball website).

Posted By: fkw
The PC773-3 Wolverine News cards are similar in design (different caption style) to the PC773-2 Taylor. And like the Taylor the only ID of who printed it is a small credit line on the left side of the postcard back.

Just looked them up, The Wolverine Cobb's are both vertical (Portrait, and Batting)

Posted By: anthony
thats the one!! good job paul...i dont normally collect the lesser known card companies (at least to me) so i have to find the actual card first...but yes the 100 willard (chocolates, right?) is the one i was thinking about...now who has one for sale??

when in doubt, keep it!

Posted By: fkw
No wonder...... the Canadian V100's are much smaller than an Exhibit or Postcard. They are out there, but it may take time before you see one on eBay. Thats cool you figured out the card issue, now it may be tough to locate one for sale.

Posted By: Joann
I've always liked that Willard Cobb because of the trees in the background. Where in the world was this thing taken? He's in uniform, but can't tell if it's the official Detroit uniform.

Those trees just throw me off as to setting and location, but I really love the card for the trees. It looks like how kids play ball - on a carved out field next to an orchard or tree stand.

(Or at least how kids played ball many many moons ago! Now there would be too many liability issues to allow them to make a field somewhere.)

Joann

Posted By: fkw
The main difference between the V100 and the Taylor PC is age. The V100 is from 1923 closer to the end of Cobbs career, and the Taylor like the other Detroit Postcard issues (Dietsche, Wolverine) are sometimes considered Cobbs rookie card (1907-09).

If you just want a nice Cobb, shop around and once in a while youll find a good deal. I picked this E121-120 up last week for $260, and you cant beat this batting pose.

Edited to add...
Maybe this card below is the one you were originally thinking of It is an Exhibit and it also has the same finished swing trees in background image. It is a 1921 Exhibit and sometimes found for $150-$300 in VG condition.

Posted By: Zach Rice
Cobb's 1921 Exhibit uses the same picture as his V100 along with a few other early 20s caramel issues. One of the smaller auction houses sold off the original photo used for the shot. A board member now owns it.

Edited to add that I love this shot of Cobb. Here's mine:

Posted By: anthony
FKW, i think that both the exhibit and the v100 are cool cards...i must of confused them since its the same swing, but i was thinking of the v100 since it is horizontal...thats one of my "things", cool horizontals
