1912 tuxedo tobacco cards!!
Posted By: Brian
I attended the annual Cooperstown card show over this weekends induction ceremony in Cooperstown N.Y. and happen to see 6 1912 tuxedo tobacco cards including Mathewson. I was told by the owner that these 6 cards were the only cards in existence and he offered them to me for $50,000 for the set of 6. I dont know much about these and I have never seen them before. Were they the only ones out there? $50,000 a ridiculus price for 6? I am just looking for some input on these tobacco cards and how rare they really are?

Posted By: Zach Rice
Tuxedo never issued a set of cards. The ones that you saw were likely made from cutting up a tuxedo tobacco ad from either a newspaper or magazine then pasted onto a thicker stock. A board memeber kindly posted this ad when these same cards came up for discussion a year ago. The ad contained six players, Walsh, Lajoie, Jennings, Mathewson, Mcgraw, and Zimmerman and it proved without a doubt where these "cards" orginated from.

Posted By: Steve M.
that they were on ebay a few years ago and went for something under $1,000.00. They were nice as they were the same pictures that appeared in the Tuxedo ads of 1915 to 1917 or so. Can't imagine they are worth anything near 50K.
