E107 Breisch Williams Scarcity Poll
Posted By: Richard
Greetings, I would be interested to hear the opinions and comments from my fellow Vintage pre war collectors on the scarcity of the E107 set. I would like to know how many cards exist for each player. Since this answer can't be definitive I am just interested in opinions. My guessetimate would be approximately 10-12 of each player. Look forward to some feedback. This is a great set because of the significance of its period of issue and the great number of Hall of Famer rookie cards.
Thank You
E107 Breisch Williams Scarcity Poll
Posted By: Scott Gross
Richard,
I think you answered your own question: Probably 10 or so of each player.

What I find extra interesting about this issue, is the collecting "theory" behind them. It seems, to me, that they are the "ultimate" type card: Collectors are just happy to with ONE. I really can't imagine (and anyone correct me) that there is another issue where more poeple have one (or two/three) card(s), than less people having "groups" or complete sets. As stated, probably due to scarcity and historical significance.

Oh, and I'm happy with mine ............

....... gotta' love his "position" (28 games in 1903; 205 BA)

Scott, absolutely correct. What player do you have from the set?
Thanks Richard |
I have a Davis, and had a Phillippe.

3 1/2 yrs old thread

You realize any time you pull up a thread that is 3 1/2 yrs old things might have changed? It's usually better to start a new thread, but there is generally no rule against pulling old ones up. |
Greetings everyone. Seems like lots of Vintage collectors have at least 1 in the collection. They sure are awesome cards. Hope to see a few more posts here.
Thanks |

same want lists
From what I remember the set collectors of E107 all had/have approximately 8-12 of the same cards on their want lists. I don't know what they are but I think that was/is the case.

brief rundown of sets
There are only a handful of people attempting the E107 set at this time. No one has ever completed it, not even the old timers.
One collector needs 1-2, another needs 8, the third needs approximately 15-16, the fourth needs about 19, fifth and sixth drop off quite a bit needing 35+/- each. Please don't ask who they are or which ones they need, I respect their privacy greatly. The pop reports will reveal very little about this set, of the above only 1 has been graded, all the rest are raw or only a few graded(and probably cracked out by now). Scott |
Scott,
Without revealing the specific cards on their wantlists, do these collectors have a lot, or just some overlap in their wantlists? Andy |
it varies.........
The top 4 need several of the same ones, I will say these are normally the team variations, which may or may not have been produced 50/50. the reason I say that is a couple of the collectors may have one team designation, the other 2 the opposite, so it's not like there is a disparity among the rarities.
To give you an example when I discovered the McGuire, New York, a couple of collectors already had it but didn't know it as they assumed incorrectly that the "Brooklyn" team designation just meant New York. SO, even though it was newly catalogued, some had "Brooklyn" and some had "New York" in their collections. It was not any rarer just because it had been uncatalogued, the same with Dahlen when I brought it to Bob Lemke's attention. Scott |
Interesting info on the variations. Thank you for posting, Scott!
|
I might add
I went thru over 400 E107's in the course of about 8 years working on the set and helping others, so lots of hand on with players, variations and the tracing of various original groups. Almost every E107 can be traced to one of about six oldtime sets by different traits.
|
Scott, thanks for the posts. You are always very informative when it comes to E107. That should be your middle name. Scott "E107" XXXXXXXXX.
Thanks |
Hi Scott. You mentioned you have seen over 400 E107's in the past 8 years. I am curious how many had the Breisch Williams overprint on back? Just wondering how scarce that overprint back is. Look forward to your reply.
Thanks |
they are pretty tough
I had about 40 different, I know of one of the near sets which only has 1, so it is probably a matter of attrition.
|
Scott, it is also possible that not many were stamped with that back.
Thanks |
