N175 Gypsy Queen portraits

Posted By: leon
Besides the Brownie Champs Gypsy Queens what are the other portraits in the set? I just got this from a board member and just thought it was stunning. It's going into the collection. As a type collector with only a handful of "needs" left I have to branch out somewhere . (basically I collect anything I like, now)

N175 Gypsy Queen portraits

Posted By: Joe_G.
Nice card Leon, I recognize that from last years REA.

Gypsy Queen, being an 1887 issue, essentially copies of 1887 Old Judge poses*, contains several portrait examples outside of the Brown's Champs. Portraits likely include Baldwin, Darling, Geiss, Myers, Radbourn, Watkins, Wright and others. Seems like just about all of the numbered card from 1887 were likely issued Gypsy Queen cards. The current GQ checklist is horribly lacking.

* only exception being the Buch Ewing examples which OJ brand didn't distribute until 1888.

And going off topic a bit . . .
For those who really study OJ & GQ, you might find it interesting to study the Brooklyn mini article from Old Cardboard and then apply some of that knowledge to Gypsy Queens. While I'm not aware of any Gypsy Queen Brooklyn minis, it is evident that the 1887 Brooklyn cards are unique from the other teams.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski
