Apparently it was bestowed upon him when he made it to the majors. <br /><br />According to Baseball Library: "Eppa also acquired a middle name: Jephtha. It was invented by a sportswriter inspired by the resonance it had when spoken between "Eppa" and "Rixey." In time, the pitcher accepted it as his own." The SABR account differs a bit. Speaking about his trade to Cincinnati: "Everything - except the nickname "Jeptha" that sportswriter William Phelan hung on him, which he tolerated but didn't like - was falling into place for Rixey." <br /><br /><br />Interestingly, that makes Scot's card an error card (the SABR site has it spelled correctly). Anyone know whether there are cards from that same issue with his "middle" name spelled correctly?<br /><br /><br /><br />
