id again please W-Unc/W560 Ruth
Posted By: leon
Just got this in. I know there was a thread about it not long ago but want to open it up once more. I spoke with Glen V a few days ago and would like one more stab at the id. I will probably catalogue it as w-unc/w560 ....I usually will further define an "unc" card if it makes sense (in my personal collection anyway).....thoughts? thanks much
ps...I think the penney is from Denver

Posted By: Zach Rice
I really wanted that one Leon, congrats you got a great deal on it. I would say its W-UNC. Frank posted an ad from an auction 15 years ago that had the same Ruth card and it was listed at the time as W-UNC. It is similar to a W560 but doesn't have the team name below Ruth's name. It looks like a W560 at first glance but I would think its part of a different set.

I have seen 3 different now, The black on red Meusel, the red on cream Ruth, and the black on green Speaker.

Here is a link to the post we had with them awhile back

http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1138252394/strip+card+question

same set, along with Glens Green Speaker.

I have been calling them "ca.1925 W-Unc Playing Card Strip Cards" for a few years now. They have to be between 1920-1930 as those are all the years Meusel played.

Frank

Posted By: steve f
E285 connection here... The concavity of the diamond edges doesn't jive with the W560's diamond. I recall reading Rittenhouse had a trade-card or some type of promo involving that year.

*was watching that card from Maine also.

Posted By: Glen V
Leon and I agreed that the card wasn't a W560 or E285, as they have the player's picture inside a diamond/heart/spade/club. The Meusel, Speaker, and Ruth card are clearly different. Leon did point out that the Meusel and Speaker had the card's suit in the back ground (Meusel has 6 clubs, Speaker 9 spades), so we thought the Ruth may be a different issue. Thinking about it, since Ruth is on an ace, the lone diamond on the card would be behind the picture, explaining the lack of diamonds on the background.

.

Posted By: warshawlaw
Here is a Jack Johnson card that shares many of the characteristics with the two depicted above. It uses an image from W580. I'd listed it in my book with the W560s but noted the differences in style and format. Do the images of Meusel and Ruth relate to any other strip sets?
