OT (somewhat) Obak Bear, A Public Art Proposal

Posted By: Max Weder
With Leon's approval, this post deals with a public art project in Vancouver, B.C. As has been done in many cities with other animals, Vancouver will have over 100 7' fibreglass painted bears, the great Spirit Bear, gracing the streets of Vancouver for the summer of 2006. The website for the spirit bears is at http://spiritbearsinthecity.com

And what does this have to do with vintage cards, you may ask? In 2004, my spouse Jennifer Ettinger created Tourorca, http://www.orcasinthecity.com. For the spirit bear project, Jennifer is looking to complete Bob Brown Bear. Bob Brown was the father of Vancouver baseball and is depicted in the Obak set. The bear will be created with his Vancouver uniform. As well, images of his Vancouver obak teammates will be added to the base of the bear. At the end of the summer, the bears will be auctioned off with the proceeds to the Lions Society of B.C. for its charitable causes, and all vintage collectors will have an opportunity to acquire a unique obak.

I've included a mock-up of the bear, with the uniform photoshop-ed by me to the bear, so you can get some idea of what the final product would look like. Jennifer's bear will of course be created with her artistic touch.

We're looking for an initial sponsor for the bear. Please drop me an email if your company does business in Vancouver and is interested in this opportunity. If you would like to see a detailed proposal, please visit http://www.ettinger.ca/obakbear.pdf

Thanks very much,

Max

(For those of you on an Alaskan cruise, it will be just two blocks from the cruise terminal.)

In the fall, Bob Brown Bear and all the other bears in Vancouver will be auctioned off with the proceeds to charity. Bob Brown Bear is guaranteed to be the world's most oversized Obak.

For details, please visit http://www.spiritbearsinthecity.com and to follow Bob Brown Bear's progress please visit http://flickr.com/photos/baseballart/sets/72057594055759822/

Thanks, Max
