opinion on McCarthy autograph
Posted By: pete ullman
My assistant gave me this for my b-day a few years ago and I have no idea if it's real or not? The only autographs I have were aquired first hand or through the family. Any help would be appreciated.

pete in mn

He lived by Sportsman's Park in St. Louis and was an autograph hound back then, so I know all of the autographs in this book are authentic.
This autograph looks good to me,but I am no expert.

Posted By: davidcycleback
In general, when you have multi-signed item, especially including common players, the average collector can get sense of overall authenticity by comparing the common player signatures to known authentic examples. If the common and obscure players' signatures look good, that's always a good sign. Forgers are spending the hours and hours perfecting their signatures of Joe DiMaggio and Jimmie Foxx, not Dick Bartell and Don Aase.

I'm no autograph expert, but know that there is no requirement that a collector buy Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb cuts. If some said to me, "I would really like to collect baseball cards, but there are so many forged Fro Joy Babe Ruths on the market," I would say "You can't collect 1963 Topps commons because of forged 1928 Fro Joys?" You can have just as much if not more fun purchasing autographs checks, contracts, letters and certified cards of Dick Bartell, Cory Snyder and Phil Garner.
