Need help finding a card for this player
Posted By: Dabox101
Hi, I was looking to talk to the experts about this question. I have a great-great uncle who played for the Phillies in 1912. I am searching to find if there are any cards ever made of him. Whether they be a major tobacco brand that made them or some little hot dog stand I need to find a card! If anyone can find a card his name was Jack Boyle, and he played in 1912 for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Heres a player link to use for reference:

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=boyleja02

Posted By: Robert
It is unlikely that a person who only played in 15 games back in 1912 had a card issued. It is not like today where everyone gets a card just by being on the team.

Posted By: Tom Hufford
Its not a card, but Boyle is included in the University of Chicago team photo in the 1913 Reach Baseball Guide, on page 502. Also he is pictured in the Chicago Sunday Tribune on Oct. 3, 1943, in an article entitled "When Chicago beat the Japs."

Posted By: Bob Lemke
Other than "Honest John" (John Anthony) Boyle in the Old Judge, we don't have a John or Jack Boyle in the SCD data base. There is a "Boyle" in 1910 Contentnea Photo Series (T209) with Fayetteville.

Posted By: Jon & Jennifer
We haven't been able to find any cards, either.

But we noticed that he attended the University of Chicago, playing for the Maroons from 1910-1912 before joining the Phillies in 1912. The UofC website doesn't provide much historical information about the Maroons for that period of time -- but the campus library archives are fortunately very extensive.

Visit the following link:

(http://libcat.uchicago.edu/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=113N332TG4053.78917&profile=ucpub lic&uri=link=3100008~!5778434~!3100001~!3100002&as pect=subtab13&menu=search&ri=12&source=~!horizon&t erm=University+of+Chicago+--+Baseball.&index=)

These are the search results for just a sampling of the many things kept within the University's Athletic Dept. archives. (One of the listings is a collection of 25,000+ photographs of athletes from a variety of sports, baseball included.) You might want to define and perform a few searches of your own within the UofC index -- we were pressed for time and limited our search very narrowly.

If it turns out that a card was never issued for Jack Boyle (since he only played for one year), the next best thing might be to inquire with the University of Chicago's library staff about obtaining a few nice prints from his college playing days. Yearbooks for 1910-1912 should be in their archives as well -- even if you can only obtain copies/prints of selected pages and not a copy of the actual yearbook. Local Philadelphia newspapers can you if any articles and/or photos of Jack Boyle were printed during the year he played for the Phillies.

Sorry we weren't able to find anything else...good luck with your continuing search...hope you're able to find something.
