I would like to buy a Ban Johnson baseball card
Posted By: identify7
But my problem is that there are none which were issued while he was active in baseball. So my choices are:

1) Buy one issued after he was active.

2) Buy a M101-2 Sporting News Supplement - which to me is a 8x10" picture on a piece of paper.

3) Buy a Fan Craze - which to me is a card produced as a part of a game, not as a collectible.

4) Buy a photograph.

Which would you select (or are there other options)?

Posted By: Al Crisafulli
I'm in the same boat as I need him for the HOF set, and I think I've settled on the Fan Craze. Unfortunately, I suppose others have made the same decision, as a midgrade example sold for crazy money on Ebay this past weekend...

-Al

I think the portraits on Fan Craze are super. Johnson's happens to be ugly--his M101-2 isn't ugly. M101-2s are "just pictures (iwth a logo, name, and a date) on a piece of paper," and cards are just a picrture on a piece of carboard with some additional info. You're being awfully pickey, and missing out on some nice stuff...

Posted By: identify7
I know, Julie. Card collecting for me has been a series of comprimizes. This is due to the attractiveness of the "alternate card" offerings, the unavailability of genuine cards, or the prices.

First I accepted Exhibits, which was easy to do. Because they are cards eventhough they are big. And postcards are too.

Then the Wheaties Series 1 Gehrig, and a later series DiMaggio just had the look I wanted. But heck, they are most or all of the rear panels of a cereal box - not really a card to my thinking. But now I accept them.

Then the crudely drawn strip cards from the 20s were necessary. Now I find them quaint.

I again hesitate here. I too would prefer the Fan Craze. But I know what is sure to follow is a graduation to the hard stuff: Dixie Lids, JuJu Drums, and then what? Pins? Matchbooks? Bottle Caps?

Posted By: dubers
I happen to have the fan craze card of Ban Johnson in excellent shape. Have had it for over 25 years and never knew what to do with it. If anyone is interested, please let me know. The set just sold at auction for over $64,000 so obviously the fan craze set is worth something for collectors.
