Posted By: rob
So what are the tougher common cards to find...not including the Dahlen variations types, more just regular commons. Of recent conversation was the Rhoades "arm extended" as being tough, is there a top 10 of commons that are generally tough to come by?

Posted By: scot reader

Rob,

Collectors are catching-on quickly. Kleinow (N.Y. Catching), O'Neil, L. Doyle (Throwing), Malarkey, Schlei (Portrait), Ganley, Merkle (Portrait), Adkins, McLean, Puttman, Rhoades (Right Arm Out), A. Shaw (St. Louis), F. Smith (White Cap), Ames (Hands at Chest), Doyle (N.Y. Hands High), Konetchy (Glove High), Lundgren (Kansas City), Magee (Portrait) and Schulte (Front View) usually sell for a premium on ebay. As one example, O'Neil in PSA 5 recently sold on ebay for $210. I also know of a Doyle (N.Y. Hands High) specimen in PSA 5 that sold off-ebay for over $500.

Scot

Posted By: RayB
I know this is very unscientific, but judging strictly by the PSA POP Report of some 50,000 graded T-206 examples the following cards have populations less than 50 total cards graded (excluding the few real rarities of course).
Persons 45, OHara;St. Louis 46, Coles 46, Mullaney 43, Revelle 46, Foster 43, Reagan 48, Howard 48, Manion 48, Lafitte 49, Demmitt; St. Louis 48, Ryan 46, Shaughnessy 49, and Smith 47.
It stands to reason at least that POP's are maturing on the set as the numbers of slabbed cards grows deeper. This maturity of the numbers likely uncovers, at least to some small extent, some or most of the tougher commons strictly based on total of examples graded. It is one of the few sets where low grade examples get to PSA as well as mid and high grade ones.
Just my two cents.
RayB

Posted By: Mike Tucci (18colt)
Ray -- with the exception of O'Hara (St. L.) and Demmitt (St. L.), the other names you listed in your post all belong to Southern League players. None of these are considered "common" cards (the O'Hara and Demmitt listed are far from common).

It does explain why Howard (the SL version, not the Cubs player) has been tough for me to acquire in a collector-friendly grade. And O'Hara, too.

Hope that helps. Anyone able to find low pop figures on major league common players in the set? I don't have access to it.

Mike (18colt)
