t206 rare backs in BST

Posted By: Jeff Mohler
wfeola has a black Lenox, brown lenox and uzit back listed on ebay and on the BST thread. I am interested in hearing from more experienced board members on the authenticity of the cards. They look OK to me (with six months of collecting under my belt!). However, the classic signs of scam appear, being that they are ungraded, sold by a seller with low feedback and a sampling of the other items that the seller has sold or bought are not vintage card related. Any help would be appreciated. They are nice cards and I would like to have one, if possible.

Thanks
Jeff

Posted By: Anonymous
Jeff,

About 17 years ago when I was around 13, I received these cards as a gift from a card dealer that was a friend of the friend. That was around 1992. I highly doubt that these t206 cards were fetching the prices you see today. Grading was not even something I knew about back then. Well to say the least these were the pride of my baseball card collection. Obviously the oldest cards in the box. I have since graduated college, gotten married, and now have a one year old. I need to get rid of my entire collection of cards and collectibles.

I have had these cards sitting in a shoebox for the last 17 years. Untouched and looked at from time to time. When I pulled them out to list on ebay, I did a quick google search to research them. What I found amazed me! All three were rare backs. I had no idea until Sunday afternoon that what I had was that rare. Truthfully after searching ebay listings for the names on the cards, I thought I would get about $20 each. I am sure glad I photographed the backs and did a little research.

I am not an expert, but looking at these cards.....they look authentic. I keep telling myself that I should have gotten them graded before I listed them, but again I am not a dealer or collector. I am just trying the get cash for my entire collection.

Please do not bash my cards. I will provide you any other photos and/or scans that would lead you to believe that they are authentic. If you live local to me, we can even meet and you can have a look yourself.

Better yet, bid on my auctions and I will send you the cards for you to enjoy.

Thanks to everyone for you interest. This has been an exciting few days. It's gonna be sad when their gone.

wfeola

Posted By: Jeff Mohler
Hi wfeola, I wasn't trying to bash you or your cards. We have enough bashing on this board already. However, certain things raised my eyebrows. Since I don't have a lot of collecting experience, I wanted some other peoples opinion's on whether your cards were authentic.

Jeff
Posted By: Cat
Wfeola:

If you thought you were going to get $20 a piece, you are going to be very pleasantly surprised. Do you have others that you are going to listing on EBay? Sometimes, it's not a bad idea to list them on BST and allow someone to overpay for them prior to an EBay listing.

Edited to correct typos unless otherwise noted.

Posted By: wfeola
I do not have any other cards even close to this age. As stated in one of my previous posts, I was given these about 17 years ago.

I guess I should have gotten them graded before listing them.

Does anyone know what type of increase in selling price I would have received by getting them graded? 10%? 20%? +++?

thanks,
wfeola

Posted By: Cat
My opinion is based solely on the Lenox Marquard (the only card I am interested in). I believe that you likely would have received a PSA 2 or an SGC 30. At those grades you would likely be able to sell the card at the $520 to $580 range. If my assumption is correct you LIKELY would not of benefited by grading since I think you will get something in or near that range anyway. If by chance you received a PSA 3 or SGC 40, then by all means you likely would of benefited since that could add a couple hundred. From the scans, it looks like he card has a crease (chin level, left border), staining on the back, rough bottom edge, and mushy corners, so I really believe a PSA 2 was the likely grade. Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking your card...it's beautiful...just trying to offer an opinion. A number of times, I bought a card assuming it would grade X and only to have it grade X-2 and have the value turn out to be less than I bought it raw.

The way the market has been lately, makes any prediction near impossible... just recognize you are going to do well by these cards. The smartest thing you have done is to come on this board and present yourself and your case and convince folks that you are real and the cards are real. Your biggest obstacle was not grading, but convincing folks you are real and the cards are real.

Edited to correct typos unless otherwise noted.

Posted By: leon
My guess is that this thread will help the prices quite a bit. There are approx 800 folks on the board everyday.....and these cards are obviously real. When determining if a cards value will increase with grading I think it's on a case by case basis. It also has a lot to do with who is selling it too. If David Bryan or the like is selling it then a vg'ish common card might not have the value increased much, imo. If you have no history of selling cards, or a low feedback on ebay, then grading by one of the big 4 companies will help the price.....regards

Posted By: Jeff Mohler
I thought these three cards brought good prices last night on Ebay. What do the other members think? I think the Drum back which closed as well was pretty strong too.

Jeff
