Posted By: <b>warshawlaw</b><p>I was too young for Kennedy (technically, not born yet), but I remember Lennon's death vividly. I was on a camping trip in Yosemite with my 10th grade class. A few of my classmates went to town for provisions. They came back announcing the death. One of the girls in our class was a total Lennon groupie. She collapsed, lots of others were crying too, just a horrible day. <br /><br />BTW, did anyone notice that yesterday was a day that will live in infamy, the day they awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve?

I was merely pointing out that yesterday was the anniversary of a world-shaping event by attempting to blend two very famous quotations about the day. The first part of the line I wrote references FDR's speech to the American people after the attack, the 2nd references a line that was attributed to the Japanese admiral who conceived of the attack when he learned that the attack had been launched prior to the declaration of war hence was a sneak attack. The actual line attributed to Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto on realizing that he had engaged in a dishonorable sneak attack is: "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." He never said it; the line was created for the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! The other common Yamamoto quote predicting the future outcome of an attack on the United States ("I can run wild for six months … after that, I have no expectation of success.") is real, and is something he is recorded to have said to a number of different Cabinet members in Japan in the 1940 time period. <br /><br />My advice to you is to sit back, take ten deep breaths and think before posting again. You may avoid posting something ignorant, inflammatory and stupid.

I have only posted once before, and I am not as familiar as I should be with the board's requirements. Sorry about that. <br /><br />I wasn't trying to hide my identity. To tell you the truth, I wasn't sure how to enter my name along with my comment. I've since figured it out (as you know, it's not terribly difficult). <br /><br />As background, I had posted in response to an entry quoting the Beatles classic, "Here I stand... head in hand...Turn my face to the wall..." It's a great song, and I commented that it was the perfect ending to what was perhaps the most "ridiculous" thread ever. I urged everyone to "Let it be" (which, of course, is also a Beatles quote).<br /><br />I made the "ridiculous" remark because Barry Sloate had started a thread calling for a truce on the board in recognition of the anniversary of John Lennon's murder, yet his suggestion generated a lengthy, angry exchange (including, for instance, whether it would have been better if Yoko Ono had been shot).<br /><br />This, to me, was "ridiculous." In retrospect, maybe I should have said that it was "ironic." <br /><br />I did not intend to be disrepectful to Mr. Sloate. Quite to the contrary. I share his interest in honoring John Lennon's memory, and I thought he had a great suggestion to that end. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. I apologize to him for the misunderstanding, which was my fault. <br /><br />So, in the spirit of both John Lennon and the Holidays, can we put this behind us? <br /><br />A Happy Holiday to all, and to all a good night!!!<br /><br />Thank You. <br /><br /> <br /><br />

Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>Morrison's gravestone is a pretty popular shrine- people visit it regularly. Was fortunate to see the Doors twice- including once at the Fillmore East when it was still called the Village Theatre. Had to leave early though- don't ask, long story.
