Opinions on an n162 Brouthers please....
Posted By: Brian McQueen

I'd like to ask the board for their opinions on this n162. I'm thinking it is missing an entire layer off of its back and it is thinner than most cards from this issue. However, it seems to me that if the back was really missing an entire layer, that there would be some sort of scuffing, damage or at least residue on what remains. But it's very white and smooth. The card measures correctly as well and there doesn't appear to be any large amounts of wear on it...as you can see, the front of the card is very nice. Is it possible that an advertising poster or some other material existed that this card might have come from? Perhaps another explaination?

If this card has indeed been skinned and is missing it's top layer, any ideas on how great of an impact it would have on the value of the card? Thanks in advance everyone.....-Brian

Opinions on an n162 Brouthers please....
Posted By: barrysloate
As we speculated earlier, it has the characteristics of the blank backed and thinner N28 and N29 that frequently show up in the hobby. These were clearly cut at one time from an Allen & Ginter advertising banner; but to this date, nothing similar has been found for N162. I doubt that anyone has ever heard of a poster advertising N162's, but it would be reasonable to think at one time such a thing existed. But for lack of any documented proof, my guess is that it is a card that has had the back checklist carefully and painstakingly removed.

It can't be the one
you are displaying because mine did not have a missing chip
on his chin.
I explained to the buyer that the card had to have been de-
laminated. That was fine with him because he liked the low
price I had on it.
Another explanation for the blank back could be that card
was cut out of the Goodwin (A36) Album. How thin is this
card ?

Posted By: Anson
On examining it up close, it doesn't look to be delaminated. If it were, it most likely was done a long time ago.

Barry's theory sounds like a good one, as it does raise some interesting questions.

Posted By: Brian McQueen

Thanks for the responses thus far. Ted, to answer your question....it's thinner than your typical n162....about the same thickness as an n28 actually. However, I just noticed something else....compared to the other n162s I have, the
borders on the Brouthers are noticably whiter. It's a significant difference actually. Most n162s are not gleaming white the way this one is. I thought I saw a picture of an album cover than had a bunch of the n162 cards on it once but am not sure. We may be on to something here, maybe my card isn't "skinned" after all?
Posted By: barrysloate
Ted- Could you check your album to see what is on the back of the page with Brouthers. If it is not blank, then it has to be a skinned card.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Here is the page of my N162 Album with Brouthers on it.
It should be obvious that Brian's card is not cut from
this page.
Brian, I sold my "backless" Brouthers 2 months ago for
$250. The front of the card was in fairly nice condition,
no chipping. I would say with all certainty you have an
original N162 card whose back was very carefully removed.
Incidently, the back on mine was just as "clean" as yours.
It is not that unusual to find N28, N29, or N162 peeled-off
backs in this condition.

Barry.....The back of this page is blank. The back of the
other 4 BB players' page (Dunlap, Glasscock, Keefe, Kelly)
has the Old Judge and Gipsy Queen advertisement.

Posted By: barrysloate
Thanks Ted. What's most obvious is that the Brouthers in the album is borderless, so Brian's is unquestionably an original card that was skinned. End of mystery.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
I already noted that my, very similar, Brouthers went for
$250 at a recent show. Many interested buyers looked at it
and the market more or less set the price.
