Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Just acquired this 19th Century Scorecard. The reverse side
has two scoring boxes printed on it.....unscored.
The condition of it (Ex to Nr Mint) is amazing, considering
it is approx. 120 years old.

My 1st question to anyone is....what year or decade is it ?

My 2nd question is....what is it's value ?

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: barrysloate
Ted- It's 1880's, although the uniforms look a bit older. It's part of a set of four, and they always come in pristine condition. I think there was a hoard found a long time ago. Its value isn't great, somewhere north or south of a $100.

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Thanks, Barry

I didn't know about any "find" on these. When did that occur ?
Also, can you describe the other 3 Scorecards that are part
of this set ? Are they as colorful ?

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: barrysloate
Each one pretty much looks the same with just a slightly different action scene and they have been around as long as I've been collecting. They are always in Near Mint condition and I have never seen one that is actually scored. Sometimes I even wonder if they are really period but my guess is they are.

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Barry

I had an expert on 19th Century Lithography art examine
this scorecard and he assured me that it was an original
item from that era. He based this on the style, printing
inks and cardboard material of the scorecard.

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Scott Forrest
Here are three that show real use. There is no doubt that they are real period lithographs. Mine come from a Victorian scrapbook that has mostly 1880's lithos, some older, some newer.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/thread/1130178580/last-1130263402/Wright+%26amp%3B+Ditson+Litho+Scorecards

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Julie Vognar
that it's from 1887 or before--1887 being the last year a batter could ask a pitcher for a "high one" or a "low one." Boy, what luxury!

Posted By: Scott Forrest
Julie, if I remember correctly you had the "underhand pitch" one. Was yours scored? Thanks.

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
JULIE

That is very interesting....about your "Low Ball" and
"High Ball" comments. And, how certain are you about the
fact that these scorecards have to be earlier than 1887 ?

It sounds like you, too, have some of these scorecards.
Can you display yours ?

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Barry

All the scorecards I have seen prior to this one have
no team identification. This one obviously has an "A"
on the players uniforms. Any guesses as to what team
this signifies ?

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: William Heitman
I have the four scorecards and would put image up, but don't know how to do it. Guess that's why I didn't get any consideration as being one of the most knowledgeable old card guys.

Picked-Up 19th Cent. Scorecard....What Year(s) ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
Bill Heitman

1st....I really want to thank you for your T206 book that came out in 1980.
Being a vintage set collector, it motivated me to take on the challenge of
completing this "Monster" set. I am now near to completing my 2nd set.

The 1st set I considered complete when I finally acquired Magie (never did
get Wagner or Plank, and "Doyle" was unknown at that time). Perhaps, I will
pursue the two "biggies" this time around....Ha....And, I must admit I very
skeptical regarding the "Doyle" card.

I didn't name anyone on that Thread, but you should be in the top 3 on that
list of most knowledgeable in this hobby. I'm very interested in seeing your
Scorecards. All you need to do is take them to a Photo place and they will
scan them and give you a Disc to load into your computer.
