See-through Goudeys?
 

Posted By: <b>Peter</b><p>So I finally got my 1933 Red Ruffing Goudey card that I purchased off of eBay. This is the one that I bought ungraded a few weeks back and asked here if it looked legit.<br /><br />Well, the card is as advertised. No unmentioned creases or shredded corners. However, I noticed on the back, some of the front shows through on the back (i.e., his name, the red bar running across the bottom of the card, etc.). <br /><br />This is the first time I've seen this on any of my Goudeys. Anyone seen this before?<br /><br />BTW, here's the URL to the auction. Posted By: <b>Chris Counts</b><p>I checked my Goudeys and noticed that the ones that show through the most have a navy blue background, just like your Red Ruffing. The yellows don't show through at all, and the reds just a little. I also noticed that the Diamond Stars, regardless of color, don't show through.

Posted By: <b>FatBoy</b><p>Adam is correct,<br /><br />No bleed through. The image comes from the front of the same card laying on the sheet below it while the ink is drying. Some colors have a tendency to transfer easier then others. Keith<br /><br /><br />

Posted By: <b>andy becker</b><p>it is from stacking wet sheets. also very common with national chicle football. i am bewildered by the major grading companies not deducting for such. it is a flaw, but a common flaw.<br />julie, at first i thought the ink had bled from the back to the front. that's not true. if you have any to check, you'll see the reverse of the card lightly inprinted on the front. but it's not a mirror (reversed) image, as it would be if it bled through. the text is readable (not backwards) which means it came from a different card....even though it is the same card, it's from a different sheet. hope that makes a little sense.

Posted By: <b>Gary B.</b><p>At first I couldn't figure out what you were talking about with the bleed through or wet sheet phenomena, until I looked even more closely at my Urban (Red) Faber card and there it is! The only place the card has dark blue is his name, and sure enough on the back of the card, I can see a VERY faint backwards image of his name!

Posted By: <b>Chuck Ross</b><p>This wet sheet transfer effect is also very common in Goudey's Indian Gum cards and the Sea Raiders and Jungle Gum sets by World Wide Gum. These are all very similar in style and card stock to the baseball cards being produced by Goudey at the same time. (Of course World Wide was owned by the same people that owned Goudey so they were probably using the same processes and maybe even the same equipment).

I did not even realize it was a goof when I bought it because it looked so good. <br /><br />The T-cards also have these wet sheet transfers/ghosts. Sometimes the grading services catch it. I have a gorgeous T218 that received a vg-ex from SGC because of a faint transfer.
