sorta OT: BBs and amazing records
Posted By: jay behrens
There was mention made a few days ago that the rookie OF form Atlanta, Francour was the first major league to not draw a walk in his first 100 plate appearances. This struck me as somewhat amazing given the fact that for a number of years it took 7 balls to get a walk. In fact, in 1886, Piano Legs Gore drew 102 walks in 118 games when you still needed 7 balls for the BB. I find this mark much more incredible than any single season record Bonds has set.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Posted By: cn
Since you mentioned amazing I had to chime in about the "Amazing Mets". New callop first baseman Mike Jacobs became the first player ever to hit 4 homeruns in his first 4 games in the major leagues acording to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Posted By: jay behrens
I saw that on SportsCenter last night. It's not that he just hit 4 HRs in his first 4 games, he a homer in each of his first 4 games, that is the record he set.

there was also a side note that Pedro Martinez fought to keep him on the roster as the Mets were going to send the kid back to the minors after the first game.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.

Posted By: identify7
I guess this is not so much a record as it is an interesting career oddity, but John Miller hit no HRs in his brief career, other than his first and last at bat in the majors.

Posted By: Brian Lindholme
Francouer's first walk WAS intentional, I am not sure if he waited out a traditional one yet...

Jacobs missed one game of hitting a HR, but added two in the next game to make up for it.

Amazing records :
I am not a big Ripken fan, but who is going to play baseball for over a decade and not miss a game unless some stunts are pulled ?? (PH every game)

Posted By: jay behrens
yes, they were all "started", but I am positive there were a few games where you he was pulled early in the game becuase of injuries.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.
