D304 Question
Posted By: Richard Masson
I have two cards in the set that have the team designation on the front blanked out (Chance and Chase). Do versions exist with the team name visible? Are they blocked out in the Brunners Bread set only and not on the other brands? Are they a rare and valuable error that can allow me to retire early?

D304 Question
Posted By: leon
These are actually the first "traded" cards. The players that have the black mark through their names are the ones that were traded late hence the black mark through the improper team name. The players came both ways on each of the 6 players that are like that (I think it was 6). As far as I know the brand on the back makes no difference in the frequency of them. It's a cool set...too bad they have really sky rocketed in price lately....
">

">

one last question answered....I haven't seen the team change cards get anymore money in auction or sales. They are about equal in scarcity, imo.

D304 Question
Posted By: robert a
Hi Richard.

My Chase "traded" is a general baking brand and as you can see Leon's is a Marten's. I would think they're available under all 5 backs, but can't confirm that. It's possible that some bakeries didn't insert the cards into the loafs in the latter years.

It would be interesting to know whether or not some of the other 25 players in the set besides chance, evers, crandall, herzog, and chase were traded in between the years 1911 and 1914 which would make it possible that they would pop up as "traded." But, seems unlikely since the 5 traded cards make the set an even 30.

These babies are usually referred to as Brunners, but the 5 backs all refer to General Baking in some way or another which tells me that General Baking Co. was over the Weber Bakery, Martens Bakery, Fleishman Bakery, and Brunners in Buffalo. Butter Krust was a certain type of bread.

0verall, each card is rare enough to where it's very difficult to determine whether or not the traded examples or more difficult than the regular examples. We do know, however, that certain players are much more difficult than others.

robert a

D304 Question
Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
Would anyone with advanced knowledge of the D304 series of cards care to provide an opinion regarding scarcity of these cards? How tough are these cards relative to some of the caramel issues? Which D304 cards are the toughest to get and which backs are the most difficult?

D304 Question
Posted By: Bruce Babcock
In my set of 25, the backs break down as follows: Brunner's (19) General Baking (3), Butter Krust (2) and Weber (1). I don't have a Martens back, which I believe is the toughest. I do not believe there are any scarcities as issued with regard to the fronts. Anecdotally, I found Tenney the toughest, i.e., he was the last of the 25 I acquired.

The set, as well as samples of the four backs I have, can be viewed at:

http://homepage.mac.com/thurber51/PhotoAlbum60.html

Any others members have the complete set?

D304 Question
Posted By: Anonymous
I have 14 of the cards from d304:
11 are Brunners
1 is General Baking
1 is Weber Baking
1 is Flieschman's (also called Butter Krust)

I believe there are far more Brunners than the others.

Not being an e-card expert of any sort..I would guess D304 Brunners would compare to the E90-3, E92 Nadja (non St.Louis), E97 neighborhood...the other backs being tougher...maybe closer to the D359 neighborhood...but I'd defer to other more expert opinions on comparing them.

D304 Question
Posted By: robert a
After looking at each player's career to get a feel for how this set was dated 1911-1914, it appears that O'Toole was also traded during that period.

Anyone have an uncatalogued O'Toole traded example?

My backs are:
Brunners.......11
Gen. Baking....2
Butter Krust...2
Martens........1
Weber..........1

By the way...someone please explain who M.Kelly is?? The only catcher for Pitt. during that time period was Billy Kelly. (interesting choice for the set considering he had a very short and average career.)

D304 Question
Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
This is great information! Here's the tally on the backs (up to now):

Brunners: 66
General Baking: 14
Butter Krust (Fleischmans?): 6
Weber: 3
Martens: 3

I'm a little confused (as usual). I have a Brunners "Butter Krust" and I've seen one report of a Fleischmans "Butter Krust". I can only assume that "Butter Krust" is a type of bread and that a few different bakeries distributed product with the "Butter Krust" name. I have posted two different backs (Brunners "Butter Krust" and General Baking).

I don't buy an SCD (Bible) Standard Catalog every year because to me the publication serves as a good check list and the prices usually don't reflect the true value of many of the different issues. The edition I have (a few years old) indicates the following backs:

Brunners

Butter Krust

General Baking

Weber Bakery

In no way am I demeaning the efforts of SCD guide (Bob Lemke) because just putting together such a comprehensive checklist and informational guide is something every hobbyist should greatly appreciate, if there's a hobbyist HOF he should be in the initial list of inductees based on his contributions (nuff said).

Would anyone else care to post different backs.

Thanks for the contributions so far - this is what makes this board so great!
