Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: Paul
Donald,

I have just received a "second chance offer" to purchase an Old Judge Duffy. You were the high bidder (though the reserve wasn't met). I'd like to buy the card but am always suspicious of second chance offers, especially when a Board Member was the high bidder.

Please contact me at pstewart@kmob.com to let me know if you were given the same "second chance offer," and, if so, why you turned it down. Thank you very much.

Paul

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: tbob
Paul- I was the 2nd underbidder on one of his (her) OJs which didn't meet reserve and made an offer and bought it for actually less than the final bid (it was close though). I think they are just trying to move some cards.
Bob

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: JudgeDred
Wait a minute now - I was the third underbidder on this card and I was provided the second chance offer and accepted it. I have confirmation from ebay stating that my second chance offer was accepted.

WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: JudgeDred
TBOB,

What card did you get from the seller? I picked up the Duffy on the second chance offer and I also picked up the Healy on the second chance offer. Both have been confirmed via ebay emails and in my ebay account status. Hopefully we are talking about different cards here.

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: JudgeDred
If one of the other guys got the second chance offer on the Duffy and they accept it AND it comes back as already sold, then all is fine, but if they accept the second chance offer on the Duffy and a message comes back stating that the transaction needs top be completed because they are the winner by virtue of the second chance offer, then there's a problem.

I have a feeling we are talking about different cards here. I couldn't imagine that ebay would screw it up this badly (I must be stupid to think that). I received the second chance offer message relatively quickly after the Duffy auction closed. I accepted the second chance offer a short time after the auction closed and contacted the seller who said all was fine.

The only two cards that would have met the second chance offer (and which could have been available) would have been the Burns or Denny cards. I'm guessing it was the Denny card that TBOB purchased.

Posted By: tbob
Judge- It was the Burns KC. Great looking card which arrived today by priority mail. The other one, Ferguson, which I won outright, I am having nervous butterflies about. I am not a hard-core OJ collector so don't know why it is so much shorter than the other one. Is this common or is the card trimmed?

Posted By: warshawlaw
scared the hell out of me just the same with an N174 dempsey I purchased some years ago when I was just starting on OJ boxers. The ones with the brand in the curved dark band are shorter than the other types. As long as Goodwin is on the bottom, you're ok

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: JudgeDred
TBob - Thank You for the response regarding which card you purchased with the second chance option. I'm a little more at ease now. I'm just curious to see what would happen if someone was to accept the second chance offer on the Duffy after an initial offer was accepted.

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: Donald Johnson
Hi guys. I didn't get one of these second bidder notices but I did email the seller after the auction. He said that he had already sold the Duffy for $800 to someone. He didn't say whether he had used the second chance offer or not. So my assessment is that the rest of these "second chance" offers are potentially spoofs. I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: JudgeDred
Don,

Everything seems legit. Both my ebay and paypal accounts were automatically updated and have the correct information for the seller after accepting the second chance offers. Payment is being sent and I'm hoping the cards come. I'm hoping there isn't a STINKY involved here. TBob got his second chance offer card in quick fashion so I'm thinking everything is on the level. It's too bad a few of the other cards met the reserve or they might have also been available in the second chance offerings. I guess I'm opening up the egg box and finding chickens.... I hope they aren't STINKY chickens....

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: Paul
I just heard back from the seller of the Duffy. I had emailed her, telling her I was interested in the card, but was always cautious about second-chance offers, and just wanted to make sure everything was legit. I said nothing about Judge Dred also receiving a second chance offer.

She emailed back, apologizing that she had accidentally sent two second chance offers for the same card, and that the other one had already accepted. Looks like a good sign for the Judge.

Posted By: tbob
Judge- to be quite honest I was a little leary and thus didn't go after but 2 of the Old Judges. Now that I quickly received them and saw what nice shape they are in, I kick myself for not going after more. Good luck on yours, I am planning on having SGC slab mine Wednesday.
tbob

Question for Spaceops03 / Donald Johnson

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
No stinky!!!

Received N172 cards:

Duffy - highest single season BA - .438 in 1894

Healy - 4 x 20 loss seasons in 5 years (you've gotta be good to be that bad and still stick around). Lifetime win% is .367 (same as Ty Cobbs lifetime BA). I like the Healy because you can read the OMAHA team name in the jersey but the team designation is Denver. I realize that this is the same for all the Denver cards but I just thought it was neat.

Foutz - 2nd highest lifetime win% (.690, 147 - 66) behind Caruthers (.692)
